ok, i have 2 sticks of 256mb pc2100 and 1 512 pc2100...before i reformatted, 1 gig was detected and has been like that for months. then i reformated a couple days ago and now it only reads 512. the 256 sticks were in the first two slots and 512 in third. ive checked to see if the pair was fried..i even moved around different slots. and nothing was wrong. then i checked the 512 stick...worked fine in all slots. no matter where i put them, it just doesnt detect a gig. what can this be?

Formatting a hard drive has nothing to do with the amount of ram detected. This is a bios issue. Does the bios detect 1gig of ram?

i didnt say it was. i agree that it has something to do with bios. im just saying, that it was fine before i reformatted. now, when you reformat, does it reset bios? im not sure it does. my friend suggested reseting the bios cause i had problems with my other hd i was installing and it would dectect it. but all thats fixed. just now, it only detects 512 and not a gig.

Rubix,
Have you tried the following arrangement?:
Slot 1: 512 Slot 2: 256 Slot 3: 256

Okay,
Just a thought, but are you sure the other two sticks are of the same type as your 512? And that they are securely in the slot?
