Unable to start firewall/connect to internet

Dell Inspiron 1464 notebook
June 6, 2010 at 09:41:39
Specs: Windows XP

I'm unable to connect to the internet - I get a little bubble in the tool bar saying ICS isn't running/there is no firewall.

I'm unable to restart the firewall services - i tried reloading sharedaccess.reg and it makes not difference.

When I go run cmd and type "netsh firewall reset" I get an error saying Warning: Could not obtain host info from machine [computer name].

When I run firewall.cpl it says there are no firewall services running and asks if i want to start them. When I do I get an error saying "Error 2001: the specified driver is invalid".

System restore doesn't solve the problem either, and i'd prefer not to reinstall windows xp (mainly because I never got the os disks with the laptop).

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Also I tried running this in DOS:

rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection Ndi-Steelhead 132 %windir%\inf\netrass.inf

It didn't fix it :(

Going try re-install SP2 and if that doesn't work i'll try a 3rd party firewall (zone alarm) and see if that fixes it

If you bought the laptop new and never made a restore disk set you may still be able to do that. Also, you should have a restore partition on the hard drive.
