I am trying to make a bootable cd with memtest on it. I have downloaded memtest to my desktop and extracted it there too. Which creates a Roxio easy cd creator file. That is the burner prog that I have. But when I try to burn it to cd using the bootable cd choice in roxio I get an error message saying that the drive is in use by another application:Roxio direct cd kernel, and it cannot use until the app is completed. This happens on 2 different machines. What am I doing wrong? Bluejay

You are evidently using direct CD, which is a packet writer. Do you have more than one burner drive in your computer? If so, look in Roxio creator to verify you are inserting your blank CD in the correct drive. If you only have one drive then you need to terminate direct CD because it is formatting the disk for direct CD use. Save that CDR for future direct CD use and try a fresh CDR. Direct CD usually has a tray icon where you can terminate the program. Look by the time.

Are you burning it as an iso file.

I use Deepburner free for creating iso images.

Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.

I have not used Memtest86 from a bootable CD but I don't think it is necessary to create an iso. I could be wrong. At any rate the OPs current issue is direct CD.

I think it depends on what version the poster downloaded. it looks like there is an iso version. Looks like that one is a zip, so I guessing you would have to unzip it, then burn it as a iso. Maybe the poster can show us what one she downloaded.

I use DVD DeCrypter v3.5.4.0 for burning ISO's...simply double click on the ISO file.

Hi, The zipped file I downloaded is named memtest 86+-1.70.iso . Unzipping results in an easy cd creator image file. I have only 1 cd drive and one burner prog. I was trying to use a cdrw that I had available. Do I need to use a cdr instead. Going to lunch now back about 1 hour. Bluejay

Just reread your original post. In addition to the issue with direct CD, which I already addressed you need to use CD creator classic. Choose to create a data disk and go to file> select record disk from image. The image should be an iso file. See response #4.

What version of Roxio CD creator are you using. I think direct CD came with version 5. There were issues with direct CD and WinXP. I am surprised you can use it. If you don't use Direct CD I suggest you remove it. You should be able to remove it and keep CD creator. If the add/ remove doesn't allow that by giving a modify or a separate listing for Direct CD then uninstall the entire suite. Reboot and use custom install to choose the components. You can choose not to install the modules you don't want then.

Both of my computers came with roxio and windows xp and have worked fine. Yes it is version 5. I am getting the option of making a bootable disk, but that's where the error occurs. You say you have not used memtest from a bootable cd, then how do you use it? Can I just unzip it to a cd? Bluejay

I run it from a floppy when needed.

Are you still getting the error that direct CD is using the drive? If so, you need to disable direct CD temporarily. Do you use Direct CD at all? Do you even know what Direct CD is?

You need to DLoad the iso version from the same site as larry pointed out.

Don't choose the option to make a bootable disk. Choose to create a data disk and go to file> select record disk from image.

In my response #6 I said the zipped file is called iso. It is when I unzip it that it becomes the cd creator. I was trying to do a cd as directed by RWD1996 in my other post http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/... response #2 That is the link I used and it resulted in response #4 in this post. I would just as soon do a floppy. Just tell me how. Bluejay

I said I was following the advice given by the person who provided the link for memtest in the post I linked to, and that was to burn to a cd. If I can do a floppy then there is no need to fool around with the cd. I have the zip file on my desktop. How do I make a bootable floppy? I have one sitting here ready to go. Please bear in mind that I am at work and my business is very busy so I can't spend a lot of time at the computer at one time. Bluejay

If you downloaded ver 3.4 it appears it is only for bootable CD. Below is a link for a different version that you can use with a floppy. At this point why not just make the CDR. Easy if you follow my instructions. You are trying to create a bootable CD instad you need to make a disk image.

If it is an iso you should be able to just click on it and your burning software should write it to a cd. If not look in the file menu and use the iso option and select the file.

Dude, just download & install DVD Decrypter. It's a very small program (less than 1MB) & I'm sure it will become handy in the future. Allow it to associate itself with ISO files, then all you'll need to do is double click on the "memtest86+-1.70.iso" file & DVD Decrypter will auto-start.

Just to let you know I followed your advice about modifying direct cd and now everything is messed up. I had to use my restore disks to get it back and now it keeps popping up and I can't get it to stop. Looks like I am going to have to completely uninstall roxio and reinstallit again, What a waste of time just trying to get a simple answer to burn an iso image.

Don't go getting hostile. You were given insructions on how to make the disk. As far as Direct CD goes you never answered my questions about it. Removing Roxio and reinstalling it isn't that big a deal. The error you originally cited indicated direct CD was controlling your burner.

I did answer all questions. I also said I have version 1.70iso and you said I had 3.4. You asked why I was trying to do a cd when I had a floppy drive. Response #10 ,I answered that those were the instructions given by the person who originally gave me the link. In response #12 I asked how to make a floppy that way I wouldn't have to contend with the roxio situation. Even with direct cd removed I got the same error. That is all I want to do now. make a bootable floppy. This computer is not the one having the problem that I want to run memtest for. I thought I was being very clear in all of my responses.
