It sounds like windows setup didn't complete successfully. Did you try to rerun setup? What size is the hard drive and how big a partition did you create for the install?

I did try to re-run set-up several times, each time I had the same response. I'm going to format the hard drive, to see if that can clear things up. The partition is 57 gig, so it should be enough

Are you booting to the Windows XP CD?

Success!!!!! I have now managed to install the OS. I split the partition and formatted the new volume, it then enabled me to install the Windows XP disc. My next question is 'Can anyone advise me on my wireless connection?
I have a pluscom router with a wireless adaptor
however after getting my computer up and running, I couldn't manage to keep the internet connection, it just kept flickering, I tried the repair fix, but it couldn't acquire my IP Address, because of it flickering between off and on, even though the connection strength was 94% and the signal 'very good', Any suggestions??

Test a wired connection first, if that doesn't lose connection then you narrow it down to a wireless issue like distance to router, drivers or even wireless router and/or settings.
