Windows XP Professional + Windows 2000 Server
When I try and connect a Windows XP Professional machine to a Windows 2000 Server, I keep getting the following error message:
“The specified server cannot perform the requested operation”.
When I join a Windows 2000 Professional machine to the Windows 2000 Server it works first time.
Anyone got any ideas?

For a fuller answer more information is required, I will however assume that the client is setup correct(Dangerous Assumtion). It does appear that your W2K server is setup wrong, but beond that I don't see what the problem is alot more information is needed some simple tips.
1. A Domain should not have a " " in any name.
2. A Domain is based on Upper Case Names so cap's don't effect anything
3. You have got to tinker *or* follow instructions to the letter, don't follow instructions and then play half way though them!
4. A workgroup and domain should not be on the same network if it is then you have a problem. (Don't tell me any reson why a WG and DM should be on same network I don't care!)

Sort of same problem, my xp machine connects to 2000 server and this is whats happening for me.
I am systems manager over a small PD network, one of the computers is running windows xp and has ran fine on the network untill a few weeks ago. When starting the computer up it ask for the user name and password and when you enter it, it sits for about a minute then says cannot log into network and will not bring up the computer. You can unplug the network cable and after a few attempts can log in, the reconnect the network cable and access the network fine. Any help appreciated. Pulling my hair out. Chief's computer

Check the setting in the NIC cards Configuration. Uncheck allow computer to turn off this device. It is in the Power Management of the NIC Configuration Page.
