Unable to install printer

WinXP pro won't install my printer.
@ start/settings/printer/add printer - I get an error message stating "Operation could not be completed"
When trying to install using add hardware wizard, it does not detect automatically. In the manual install menu, my printer make and model is listed, I choose my printer from the list and then get another message. Unable to complete "RPC server is unavailable".
I've checked the services and UPNP is running as is RPC.

Yeah, logged in as admin.
also checked if it was the parallel port / LPT1, but device manager states its working ok. Tried setting it to LPT2,..etc. Still nothing.
Just to see if it was the PnP service I uninstalled my vidcard and restarted. PnP picked it up and installed the drivers for it.

Had the same problem trying to install a HP722C printer. Ended up running the CD that came with the printer, then XP picked up on the CD as not compatible with Windows Xp. Anyway, XP finally installed the printer driver for my HP. No problems since then.
