On USB sticks there is a small switch which should be unlocked before you attempt to format. That is exactly what the switch is for... to prevent you from formatting and possible deleting valuable information.

Actually your title says it all "unable to format WRITE PROTECTED USB"

... its not always a "switch" problem but maybe a registery issue click here.

... Or
**************************************************************
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies]
"WriteProtect"=dword:00000000

******************************************************

... copy and paste the above into notepad ...save as type "all files"

... file name "EnableUSBWrite.reg"

... once saved right click it option "merge"

... you're done!
