Can anyone please let me know how in the world do i format my hard drive ? I have windows xp pro and want to delete the c: and inatall win xp pro again from scratch.i have just spent 2 hours but no luch. i tried it with win 98 startup/boot disk, did fdisk, deleted the partitions but now it cannot find the c: and the Cd rom drive ?
do i have to make new partitions ? how ? do i allot all the disk space to it ? there are 2 partitions, primary and extended ? which 1 do i create ? thank you guys

You do have to make a new partition.
Use FDISK command on the start up disk.
Insert the Win XP disc and restart the PC to format this partition to FAT32 or NTFS.

thks michael, i did what you said. but it dont recognise the cd rom drive, i think the drice letters have changed. i booted my computer from win 98 startup disk, did fdisk, deteled the partitions, the created a primary partition, restarted the system with win xp CD but it wudnt run. i am sure the CD is fine.
It says you cannot run this from ms dos ? or at times it says ? incorrect ms dos version ? gosh this is blunder. i am fed up. pls help

In bios set the CDROM as first boot device. Put your XP cd in and reboot. The XP disk has all the necessary partitioning and formatting tools.

the cd drive doesnt use drive letters in DOS, the win98 bootup disk fdisk utility aint the best one to use. can think of many better ones.
boot off the windows xp cd and use the built in ulility after you have pressed f8

i have given up guys i think i will have to spend 20-30 quid in having it done. anyway thks lots guys...cheers

You were already given the answer you need! Reread response number 5!
Asus A7N8X-X
1800+ @8x210mhz

Ti4200/8X 128mb
WDC 60GB

20-30 quid in having it done, MORE LIKE £60
Stick with computing.net 'cos it's free and you are nearly there.
Where in UK are you?

Re-read Response Number 5 but make sure you take out the start-up floppy after the partition has been made.
For Win 95 98 & ME you need the start up floppy disk for format the partition, but XP can't use it so you have to boot off of the XP disc once the partition has been made. Win XP disc can format to NTFS or FAT32. I use FAT32 but some say NTFS is better.
