Ok A Toshiba Laptop at work as of a couple of days ago is unable to download anything at all through any browser, IE, Mozilla, or Netscape.

Basically It seems to time out before the "save file as" window pops up. Browsing itself works perfectly, and we haven't been able to find anything else with the windows install.

I have done a fair bit of research on this problem without many results, and have tried the fix that Microsoft suggests, which involved deleting all index.dat files and having windows recreate them (& making sure they aren't read-only). This did nothing...

Please if you have any ideas let me know because we don't want to have to reinstall windows on this machine.

In WIN XP, check the EVENT VIEWER for error messages. Some SERVICES may be involved.

From the Update server in your Local Area Network
Make sure you have the correct server listed in the "Location" section.
Try rebooting your computer.

Check security settings, especially if networked.
May lack adm approval

Try a wide variety of download types, as some may be protected files.

Try a download manager from www.shareware.com
EXAMPLE:
Web-enabled Download (supports resume):
realm.exe 215 kb (installer file) 29.6 mb (entire installation)
To use this web-enabled installer, you must first download a tiny file that will run the setup program for you. Click on the link above to download the realm.exe file. Then double-click on the realm.exe and follow the on-screen instructions.
As the setup program installs The Realm On line to your system, it will download the necessary files from the Internet. In the event that you lose your connection to the Internet, or cancel the install, the next time you run the setup program it will remember where you left off. The install process will resume and only download the files that you haven’t already received.

FTP option
Instead of using your web browser to download the files, you should try using an FTP program to do a straight FTP. (If you don't have an FTP program two good places to look for shareware are www.tucows.com and www.shareware.com.

There were no logs relating to the problem.

"From the Update server in your Local Area Network Make sure you have the correct server listed in the "Location" section. Try rebooting your computer."

Can you explain this please. I have never seen an update server in Network Connection Settings.

I am the network admin and yes he has correct permissions / proxy access. There are no "Protected" files, he is an executive and has full network access. I tried getright to no avail..

FTP has always worked, inside explorer, or through a client.

Here's where it gets stranger. Netscape works fine. Not sure if It is because of something I did earlier (messing around with .dat files), or if I just missed the fact that it was working earlier.

I am almost 100% positive that this is an IE related issue, and most probably has something to do with file caching. If anyone else has any tips please feel free to post.

(thanks for your input EC)..

Do you have all the most recent IE updates?
Also, the Locatiob server is that place when you select DOWNLOAD TO or SAVE TO, to make certain that it is the correct PC
(in the network)
Just by curiosity, can you SAVE any files at all, like create a WORD document and SAVE that and then recall it.
If you can, then I'd concentrate on your Network settings, like the adapter and NETWORK protocols, ie TCP/IP.
Also, anti-spyware products in place can BLOCK what you describe.

Yes IE is updated.

Yes I can save and load files. Yes I can download files in Mozilla, and Netscape,

AND Internet Explorer is ok for other users... So it must be user specific...

Have run Addaware and SpyBot on it...

Also where do you set the location server? I have never seen that before.

Cheers.

Basically, when it asks you to SAVE FILE TO, select the CORRECT location, especially in a networked system whereby, many PCs may be lsited as an option.

Do you think I am a retard? I am a network admin...

The save file to box is not even displaying, as you would know if you actually read my first post... I don't want to offend you EC, but I am intelligent enough to try "Saving it to the CORRECT location" myself. Do you actually know anything about the way internet explorer caches files, or are you just throwing obvious solutions at me because you have nothing better to do?
