Comment:

When I started my computer this morning, windows started but I began getting corrupted file and application messages (many from Outlook, some from other programs). I restarted and now it will post but will hang on a black screen just before the Windows loading screen would appear.

It will not boot from my XP cd, it will not boot in any safemode option nor to the last good configuration. This is the last line that comes up when trying to start in safemode:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\fltMgr.sys
(not sure if that helps)

Any advice or comments would be hugely appreciated.

To boot from the CD you must enter the bios setup routine and make the CD first in the boot sequence.
Then. when you boot, watch the screen closely and hit a keyboard key when you get a message that it's needed. You need to be quick. You only have a couple of seconds to hit a key.

However it sounds like you might possibly have a hardware problem.

first off check that your boot order boots the cdrom first and try to boot from cd and preform a repair install. will need to go int he bios to do that.if ur getting post i'll asume ther is nothing teribly hardware related wrong with ur system. was ur computer ever set to dual boot? if u cant boot form ur windows cd ur pretty much screwed. Try booting from the windows cd with the hd removed just to verify teh ce-rom works.

As mentioned above, check your boot order from bios. Get a Bartpe Cd (nice live version of xp on cd) and boot your machine and attempt to repair

Yep, the repair installation is the first step in your case. if it doesn't help, you may need a new system installation or it may be a hardware problem, unfortunately. Did you comp emit any strange sounds while loading? anyway, you'll have to save all your data from c: partition. It can be done by using live rescue cd from a backup program like true image for example. or you may connect your hdd to computer of your friend and coppy critical files.
