Unable to boot with flash drive in

I have recently bought a flash drive (PQI USB2.0 512MB) If I leave it plugged in when I try and switch on my computer it sometimes freezes and won't continue booting until I remove the drive. The boot order is set to hard drive only so it shouldn't be looking to boot from USB. The activity light doesn't flash during this time either. This only happens intermittently.
Its not the end of the world but its one of those niggly computer problems! Has anybody got any suggestions?
