PC wouldn't boot - so ran chkdsk /r and fixboot from recovery console. since then PC still won't boot - but now can't get into safe mode either.
Hit F8 and choose safe mode option - get the messages on screen such as multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows\System32\Drivers\agp440.sys but then machine just hangs.
Do you have a virual drive or Spyware Doctor installed?.Either one of these can cause these issues.

Try doing a system file check. insert your xp cd in the cdrom.. close any autorun stuff which comes up. go to start .. then run .. type "cmd" then hit enter. In the command prompt box which appears type the following exactly: sfc /scannow ... don't forget the space between the c and the / .. this will repair or replace any necessary system files.
reboot and tap f8 .. this should now allow you to get into safemode
