I have had my computer for about a year, and tonight I attempted to back up for the first time, from the XP Back up wizard. However, as I went to activate the back up, a window popped up stating: "The backup file name could not be used. D:\Backup.bkf Please ensure it is a valid path, and that you have sufficient access."
1. I don't see why I cannot back up onto a CD-RW
2. I added my admin account to the backup operators group, but it made no difference.
3. The file name was the default "Backup" name, so that isn't an issue. (I tried other names.)
4. I then tried to back up via my CD burner instead, but it stated that the disk was full or the information too large for the disk.
Any insights for me? This is very vexing.

See microsoft article number
309340
just put that number in your search bar
you can print instructions out....

I wouldn't even waste my time using MS backup program. I'd suggest you get another or an old HD and backup your import documents to it or if you can fit everything on a few cds I'd do that. MS backup program sucks.
TECHZAPORT OUT!!!

The Microsoft Backup program is an old piece of junk that they found somewhere and retrofitted it to work on XP. It does not work well and has many many drawbacks. You mentioned backing uo to CD. It cannot be done directly although the indications are that it is possible. You must first write the file to HD and then burn it to CD. Long labouious task with little benefit.
If you want a real challenge try running a scheduled task using Backup. I have not been able to get it configured properly. One has to be there when the scheduled task is run and that negates the purpose of the Scheduled Task. I am currently searching for software that will perform backups for me. I have given up on Microsoft Backup.

Further to the above rant I have since downloaded the trial version of Second
copy 2000. I am going to try this for 30 days and see whether it will do what I want. Indications are that it will.
