My roommate's computer setup:
ASUS-A7S333
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
512MB SDRAM
GeForce2 64MBOkay...everything was working fine the other day, but my roommate experianced some freezing and so he restarted. Occasionally the computer would not recognize the HD so I figured the problem with freezing lay with connection problems between the mobo and HD. To fix the problem, we replaced the HD (WesternDigital) with a new (Maxtor) one. The size is significantly greater, but it should not have been an issue. All of the BIOS settings look good and all of the pins (Primary and Secondary IDE devices) are set to Cable Select. I had them all specifically set, but to try and weed out the problem, I changed them. The XP installation on the Maxtor took forever.
After tinkering with it for several hours....
I have updated the BIOS to the latest version (1006) and I have changed just about every conceivable option within the BIOS that I can think of. Now, the issue is not that the comp runs slowly. I never even see any setup or loading screens at all. After POST and PCI device readouts, I get a blinking cursor just staring at me. I changed the boot sequence to no avail. I CAN boot off the 3 1/2 floppy drive, but NOT either HD or the CD-ROM. I got very few ideas left. Plz help!-Cyclone

your ide devices should not be on cable select. Change them to the hdd as primary master and make sur all jumpers are set accordingly. what in the world are you doing messing with settings in the bios when you have issues with a hdd installation. Set it for default settings except for the primary master which should be set for LBA as it is a large drive.
