Hello all,

I have a .txt file that contains comma delimited values (CSV) of data that was exported from “Goldmine” software if any of you are familiar with that. Long story short, we don’t have the software anymore so I have no other options for re-exporting data using a different format.

The text file contains data that was originally formatted with the following “headers”:

ADDRESS, CITY, CONTACT, CREATEBY, DEAR, LASTNAME, NOTES, PHONE1, INFO, STATE, TITLE, WEBSITE, ZIP

Now in .txt format all of the data is separated by line returns for each contact, however the data contains lots of empty strings. I am attempting to format the data to make it user friendly. I have opened this file in excel using an .xls extension and each cell in column A has all of the information for each contact. Is there a way I can create a formula to format all of the contact data into their respective columns while eliminating the empty strings? Or at least something to speed up the process of manually altering ALL of this data, even a .txt file would be better. I’m just not sure how to go about automating the process…

SAMPLE DATA:
,"358 Fake Ave E","","","Saint Paul","","Charles Luux","CHADWORTH","","","Charles","","","","","Luux","","","","","(555)222-7777","","","","MN","","President","","","","","55555"

,"200 Fake Blvd W","","","Saint Paul","","George Alden","CHADWORTH","","","George","","","","","Alden","","","*** PATP (Pat Parinnio) *** May 16, 2005 at 11:30am

,"9445 E Fake Rd NW","","","Minneapolis","","Dennis Franferdian","CHADWICK","","","Debock","","","","","Franferdian","","","","","(763)555-5500","","","","MN","","Chief Executive Officer","","","","","55555"

...he's a loser she said...

Try importing the data into excel instead of opening it as .xls file. Excel will then allow you to select what data belongs to what column...

Excel menu > Data > Import External Data > Import Data...
