depends on how you installed xp with 98. Different partitions? If so then no problem. Delete the windows/98 folders on c:. Edit the boot.ini and remove the 98 entries. You're done.

Then the only way is to go into DOS, use F disk, format C drive then reinstall XP. Because you just delete 98 from your computer it will mess it up badly. SO back up your stuff and format if you want to get rid of 98.

I think on a multi-OS system, all windows partitions call themselves C: drive. So when you log into either win98 or Win XP, they might be on physically different partitions, but they refer to their system partition as the C:.

Thus, first make sure whether they are the same or different partitions (partition isn't always interchangeable with drive). If someone else did the install for you, they probably set up a new partition for you. If you did it yourself, and installed XP into win98's partition, then you'll have to backup everything and format.

This is why most experienced users create multiple partitions. We set aside maybe 4-10 GB for the OS partition (depends on if you use the desktop or My Documents to hold temporary stuff)...and we use the rest of the hard drive as a data partition (or multiple data partitions). That way, if we need to re-install the OS (which is a good idea every few months since Windows tends to accumulate stuff and slow down), we can just format and re-install the OS with our data in-tact. (Might need to back up certain things, but it'll be much easier than backing up the whole hard drive)

wanderer,
If you have 98 and XP on the same partition they would both write files to programs folder on c:\, correct? I don't know just assuming!

Now if a person uninstalled every program when they are booted to the 98 installation it would probably take most of the files out of the program folder on c:\ that 98 uses, maybe a few that XP uses cause it might use some of the same program files that 98 uses.

One time when installing XP, the setup tried to install on the same partition on my machine. It wanted to make a separate windows folder to install itself on something like windows(2) folder.

Assuming that this is the case for mirna could not they uninstall all programs while booted to the 98 install. Then boot to XP delete the 98 windows folder and edit the boot.ini?

Only way you can install xp and 98 to the same partition is change the name of the xp windows folder to something else. Otherwise 98 windows folder is overwriten rendering 98 inop.

If this were the case you would only delete the 98 related folders and not those, like programs, that are common. Any apps formerly in 98 would have to be reinstalled but they would have access to their data as they did in 98 because those non OS related folders weren't deleted.

So you wouldn't have to uninstall the apps from 98 just reinstall them in xp.

Last step as you suggest would be to edit the boot.ini and remove the 98 entries and set the timer to 0 so you don't stop on bootup.
