Comment:

I recently installed Windows XP onto a laptop. I had previously Windows 2000 on it, however i installed XP and it installed no problems. However now everytime i start up the laptop it says which OS do you want to load and gives XP and Windows 2000 as options. If i select Windows 2000 my old OS it says that their are files missing and that it cannot load, and Windows XP which i want and i have just installed is ok. Does anyone know how to totally get rid of Windows 2000 and this option. Regards Thanks for everyones help in advance.

to do a clean install do the following:

As soon as u turn on ure computer press del or whateva ure computer uses to enter the BIOS......when u go there go to BIOS configuration and set ure computer to first use the cd rom in the boot sequence, then A or C....then save the setting and insert ure winXP cd rom when ure pc restarts.....it'll then take u to the installation...over there delete ure current partition and tell it to create a new one....use NTSF for ure new partition & then let windows do the rest.....when windows restarts again go to ure BIOS again and change ure BIOS back to the way it was...

If you only want to remove the entry of win2k then go to folder options and allow viewing of hidden and system files then do a search for the file boot.ini. You will have to edit it as an administrator. Delete the reference for win2k and you won't see it again. If you don't dare frig with that then right click on My Computer/Properties/Startup and Recovery and uncheck the display list of o.s. option.
If win2k is still on another partition then just format that partition and good bye win2k. I have only played with XP a couple times but the principles here are the same as win2k (which I prefer), good luck.
