Hi:

I have a laptop running WinXP professional.
At home, the laptop connects to Internet via the cable modem(Road Runner). The setting of TCP/IP uses DHCP services. It works fine. However, at my work place, I have to use static IP address to get my laptop connected to the LAN(the networking admin doesn't know why the DHCP doesn't work there). This means that I have to input all the numbers for IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, prefered DNS in the TCP/IP configuration dialog window to connect my laptop to LAN at my working place. It's OK for me if I only need to do it once. But life is not always so good. All the numbers in the TCP/IP configuration dialog window will be gone after I use DHCP services to configure TCP/IP at home. The next day, I have to input all the numbers again at the working place. hmmmm.

Are there any work around that I don't need to do the TCP/IP configuration agian and again to get my laptop connected both at home and working place?

Thanks,

George

Just wondering if you created a new connection for work in the control panel,or if you are just reworking the same connection each time?

I tried to create a new connection for work. Following is what I did using the New Connection Wizard of WinXP.

1. Click "Create a new connection" task
2. Chose "Set up home or small office network" and click "Next"
3. Click "Finish"
4. The Wizard brings up another dialog window "Welcome to Network Setup Wizard". Click "Next"
5. Clcik "Next"
6. Select a connection method. Choose "Other", and click "Next"
7. Choose the first one: "This computer connects to the Internet directly or througha hub. ..."
8. The Wizard asks me to select Internet connection from a list, which includes the one "Local Area Connection" I set up for home. And the other one called "1394 Connection" (1394 Net Adapter)
9. If I choose "Local Area Connection", then there is still only one connection. Cannot create a new connection, that I can set up TCP/IP with stattic ip address for work.

Your'e right. The connection wizard keeps reverting to the original connection when trying to set up a new one.I don't know if it could some how be made to work by switching between different users in XP.I found several shareware programs that say they can do this for you. Here is a link to one if you want to try going that route.
