I am currently running ZoneAlarm on my XP machine. Recently I downloaded Service Pack 2 and windows turned on its built in Firewall automatically. However i still have ZoneAlarm running simultaneoulsy with the XP firewall. Can both Firewalls be running at the same time or should I shut one down? Thanks from B4

You must have only one firewall. Shut down the built in XP firewall.

Having both on should not cause any conflict. So I'd say leave it on.

I'll take the middle ground. Although the Windows XP firewall will co-exist with Zone Alarm I would still turn it off. It can be problematic in stopping more than you want it to.

Zone Alarm properly configured will provide all the protection you need.

From what I have heard, it lowers your security because they compete.

If both of them run prefectly at the same time with no problems then leave them both on. However, if you do have conflicts between the two disable the built in Windows Xp firewall as suggested by Microsoft.

How can you tell if you have conflicts between the two?

When you start beating your monitor because your program can't access the internet.

Seriously, though, the XP firewall adds no extra security over zonealarm, and creates so many problems for so many people that it would be best for all of us if you were to just disable it.

I am running both the XP firewall and sygate on this machine and have had no conflicts/problems yet. I am led to believe that XP SP2 has been 'designed' so that the built in firewall will co-exist with most others. BTW my machine still comes up fully stealthed on all the test sites.

i would say turn one of them off, for two reasons

1) Both are software firewalls, so having both running is using unnecessary system resources

2) If you need to open a port for any reason (e.g. if you use bittorrent, or any remote control software), you'll have to open that port twice. Why create twice as much work for yourself?

I've read in multiple publications that you must never have both Zone Alarm and Windows Firewall on at the same time.

Disable one or the other. For me the choice was easy, as Zone Alarm also conflicts with PC Cillin Antivirus, so I uninstalled Zone Alarm.

Having said that, Windows Firewall only protects you from incomming threats, Zone Alarm used to protect my from outgoing threats as well.

I suggest disabling Windows Firewall and using only Zone Alarm, if this works for you.
