I have two computers at my desk (Win 98 & Win XP). I use broadband internet. What is the simpliest solution (step-by-step) so both computers can use the same printer or scanner.

Very interesting question! Please post back with more info:

Do your computers have NICs (Ethernet Cards) or at least available slots for them?
Do your printer and scanner have parallel and/or USB connections?
Do you want to be able to use the printer/scanner when one of the computers is turned off?

In the meantime, check out this device:

With the right cables, I think you could get everthing working without having to install any internal hardware.

Both computers are online through a router, so yes the NIC's are in place. Both computers have USB/parllel connections. The scanner is USB only, the printer is both USB/parallel. Yes I would want to use the devices if one of the computers is turned off, though both are turned on 90% of the time.
Currently I have a parallel cable connected to each computer and connect the the one that I need prints from. It works, just alittle inconvient.

Wow--you're networked :-)

If the router will allow each computer to "see one another," you can enable printer sharing. (Alternatively, you could get install a second ethernet card in a computer, and directly connect the computers with a crossover cable.)

The scanner complicates things--and I guess you don't want to keep disconnecting and reconnecting it when you swap computers. You would need some sort of USB hub, as far as I know.

I searched around online, and came across this device: USB Share-A-Box
http://www.miradex.net/miradexpress/592usbdevices.html

I found this at two other sites, but the price was $95 instead of $79. I don't know how much you are willing to spend, but this device seems like the "simplest" and most flexible solution to your problem.

There are other hubs and switches that may work if you investigate the link in my first reply.

By the way, if you are using two keyboards/mice/monitors, you may want to look into a "KVM switch."

You might also want to direct your question to the hardware forum. Good Luck!

My first question of the day was concerning a new external USB hub to allow more USB connectivity with my devices, but it isn't working. No one has responded to that question.

How do I do print sharing?

Hi again! The best way to get info on print sharing is to click help on the start menu, and type in "printer sharing".... Microsoft actually provides decent walkthrus
