Comment:

I downloaded a WinMe vesion of the TweakUi utility onto a flash drive using my WinXP computer. I have a old P3 750MHz running WinMe that my kids use and I noticed amost all of the icons on the desktop are corrupted to the same icon ,its one of the windows default icons for a file type ? I know TweakUi has a rebuild icons option and was hoping this would fix the problem . Howevr when I try to install the utility off the flash drive onto the WinMe I recieve an error stating unable to place shortcut in control panel cannot locate .cnt file ? Anyone know a fix to this should I perhaps try and download the utiltiy again incase I had a bad download ?
Thanks Nick

Nick, Before you go thru all that trouble right click the Desktop, choose Properties, under the Settings tab change the Color Quality from 32 but to 16 bit, click Apply/OK. Now go back and change the Color Quality from 16 bit to 32 bit, click Apply/OK. This should rebuild the shelliconcache file and may correct the problem. If it doesn't that try a new download of Tweak UI.

Nick, If you are talking about Tweak UI 1.33 it has a weird installation process. The link below under "Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows 98, and Windows 95" explains it.

That's probably the problem.

I noticed almost all of the icons on the desktop are corrupted to the same icon

That appears that all the Icons have been DRAGGED to a location that Stacks them on top of each other. I have seen someone do that on a work computer, years ago.

Booting to safe mode, then back to normal mode rebuilds shelliconcache in 9x also.

When you've done that it might be worth increasing your icon cache to reduce the likelyhood of it happening again:

It requires reboot afterwards.

PS. You can go higher than 2000 too. Even MS say 4096 is OK and the Kelly's Corner fix uses 12000.

Dear Firends , I first tried changing the color to 16 bits in display properties and that had no effect on the icons and they still remained the same ! Then I tried starting WinMe in safe mode and that was the fix ,now all icons are back to their normal look ! Even after it starting in safe mode I restarted it normally and the icons where still dispalying properly ! So again THANK YOU an a special thanks to LEORI who suggested the safe mode fix !
Take Care ,Nick

Either now or if it happens again, increase icon cache as per #5.
