Specs: Windows XP
HI all,
Win XP Ser Pk 3 Hm Ed:

I need to know if there is a freeware that gets rid of deleted files and their left over junk.
I have them all over. Did a manual last nite until 3 AM. They're all over the place from yrs gone by.

Gained back 2 gigs afterwards, did a reinstall of Win XP, defrag, restart. Working fine. But I still have trash laying about.

Wd really like a good bar of soap, hot water & a scrub bucket.

Tried my Zapit freeware. Does not do the trick or all that junk wd not have been there from yrs of deleting.

Just wanted to know what to try. Read your discussion about 'revuninstaller,' but that sounds like it is only for deleting the software.

I want to delete the junk after the software has already left earth.

Have heard that deleting really does not "Delete."
Do I use one of those military cleaner programs?

B nice now. I'm a young great grandma trying to work on her great grand kids photos. ROFL.

Thank you so much for having me here.

Ccleaner will clean up old, temporary files, and you can use its registry tool to remove orphaned registry entries. Every file on your machine has registry entries, and sometimes they don't get removed. This won't give you any extra hard drive space, but will help to keep the machine optimized.

Deleting doesn't actually delete the files, but marks the space they inhabit as being free (can be overwritten with new data). You could use "one of those military cleaner programs", but it wouldn't make any more space available to you.

Download and install Ccleaner (a free download), run the cleaner after selecting the options you'd like (I just check all options), then run the registry tool. Defrag and reboot.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Hi Sci-Guy,
I answered you seveal days go.
I came back to ck to see if my thank you was here. I had a problem after writing you and trying to submit.

Think I was too anxious to thank you that I forgot to 'log in.' Tried to log in then, but then my message to you had evaporated.

I didn't think it wd take me so long to get back here and try thanking you again.

So, CCleaner has a 'registry,' option huh? Neat-o. I did have CCleaner and did a cleaning. Also have Zapit, Wipe, along w/ the ones that come with. Clean disk, chkdsk, defrag. Used them all and I still have stuff.

Mostly now it's the free photo programs I dnloaded. . . and uninstalled when I find that it is only a trial or that they are not what I'm looking for.

Found out that "free download," does not mean it's free. I do not have the money to pay for the program, so why try it.

I have found the 'left overs,' in places like, when I click on a folder and sometimes it will ask me if I want to open something with a program I had deleted. "Vision, Photomiester, Magic" something or other.

I'm running the CCleaner again and paying attention to the 'Registry' thingy.
Thank you for caring.
