Turn off Windows Messenger

Or better yet kill it. Messenger is one of the many xp services that can be a security risk. You should kill the service when you're not using it. Start, Run, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. See this site. The guy has done his homework and has charted out services, what they do, and what they could do. http://www.blackviper.com/

In addition to ryan's advice (above).
If you are also using Microsoft Outlook, go to...Tools...Options....Other(tab), and untick 'enable instant messenging in Outlook'. (This will stop the programme loading each time you open Outlook).
If you are using Norton Anti Virus, go to...Options....Norton AntiVirus....Instant Messenger, and Untick 'Instant Messenger'. (This will stop an error screen appearing on startup).
