Is there an option to turnoff and/or temporarily disable messenger without uninstalling it? OR if not, how do I uninstall?
helenjane

Maybe some help in this:
How to prevent Windows Messenger from running on a Windows XP-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302089/OR
HOW TO REMOVE MESSENGER FROM XP:
Look for sysoc.inf in C:\Windows\INF.
open it and search formsmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
change it to
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,7
Now you can remove it via Add/Remove Programs.
OR SEE: http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp/display.asp?id=1125

Here is a small 22KB download that can turn it off and on at will.

I turned mine off 3 years ago and never turned it back on.
The grc.com site has lots of good security programs, scanners and information.

Just go to the start menu and click on administrative tools and then click on services and disable messenger.

Try
Shoot the Messenger
It is a safe way to disable and enable messenger.Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Thanks all. Was needing to know about the Windows instant messenging service, not sure if all the above apply?
