Is there an option to turnoff and/or temporarily disable messenger without uninstalling it? OR if not, how do I uninstall?

Maybe some help in this:

How to prevent Windows Messenger from running on a Windows XP-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302089/

OR
HOW TO REMOVE MESSENGER FROM XP:
Look for sysoc.inf in C:\Windows\INF.
open it and search for

msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

change it to

msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,7

Now you can remove it via Add/Remove Programs.

Here is a small 22KB download that can turn it off and on at will.

I turned mine off 3 years ago and never turned it back on.

The grc.com site has lots of good security programs, scanners and information.
