My question is, why would you want to use a device worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars, that uses a LOT more power, to replace a remote worth just a few dollars?

Yes you can I had a program at one time with 98 I used it with an external IR reciever/transciever (not a laptop but I'm sure it would be the same principal)I wanted it just to play with so I found a program that you pointed the remote at the IR reciever and the program stored the code (also allowed you to view it)then when you pressed the same button on the screen (with the mouse)it would send out the signal (not as strong as a normal remote but if I placed the IR device close enough it would work)

With it you could take any remote controll and turn on various program's on your computer simply by pointing and pressing a button (that worked very well from a distance Better then it did on the TV it was designed to controll)which by the way is why I was playing around with it in the first place !!

If I can dig it up I will send you the link
