Trying to remove LILO

I have WINXP and Linux on my machine. I want to remove LILO from the MBR, but can't. I don't have a WINXP CD, so I can't go into the Recovery Console and use fixmbr. I have also tried to remove LILO through Linux with the command lilo -u but it tells me permission denied. Any ideas?

go into msconfig, open boot.ini see if it can be taken out of the boot menu at least, if lilo is even in the boot.ini

lilo isn't in the boot.ini
I failed to mention that I am running a Knoppix hard drive install, which is essentially Debian. Do I need to log in as root so that the lilo -u command is granted?

Boot off of a DOS boot disk (win9x or me). If you don't have one, you can download it from bootdisk.com.
