Trying to install XP

I am tying to instal xp on to a harddisk for a computer but i am having some trouble with it as i try to install 98 to upgrade it to xp but it will not let me install 98 as i am getting a error message when i boot up saying (CPU unworkable or changed please got ot the CPU SOft menu) and when i skip that process and try to boot from a disk and to setup 98 it says bad fault... i really need some help reply please

Forget about installing 98 first. Place your xp disk in the cdrom drive, set your bios to boot from the cd first, reboot your pc, and follow the directions on the screen. If this is an "upgrade version" of xp you may beed to put the win98 disk into the cd drive when prompted, but this is just to verify that you own win98.

i have a question would this be a problem if at the beggining of the comp starting and it said primary hard disk fail and cpu is unworkable??please reply

Yes if your hard drive is not recognised in BIOS you will not have a drive to install onto. You need to go into BIOS and set to default, this is covered in the Motherboard Manual.

I have mad my motherboard recognized the computer although when i try to setup xp it stoppss at a certian part saying loading file defaults (kernel bugger..) and now i have tried to instal another veraion an it gave me this message which i am not sure waht it means

Use the 98 start-up disk and do a chkdisk /R and see if that helps you with your issue.
