trouble booting/cannot find files

i just reinstalled windows xp after much difficulty.. it involved restarting the system many times. now it wont boot unless i go to the menu where the option is for "safe mode".. if i choose start windows normally, its ok. but tahts the only way i can. also, i cant find the files that used to be on my desktop before reinstalling windows.. where did these go?? BTW i only reinstalled windows because of computer troubles :P

Try booting in safe mode and then reinstalling windows xp then after it boots up try running the windows update utility and then try running it. Let me know how it urns out.
