Comment:

I have Windows XP and I have received a Trojan Horse. It has infected 94 files in C:\System Volume Information\restore etc etc etc. It is also in my C:\Windows\Systb.dll, C:\Windows\winobject.dll and C:\Windows\Winserv.exe
I get a message popping from NAV saying I have a Trojan Horse in one of these files but when I scan with my NAV I do not show having a virus. When I go to the online virus scan in Symantec, it shows I have the 97 files infected. I have recorded each one but what do I do to get it out of there?
How do I get it out?
Help!!!!!! Katie

Do you have the latest updates downloaded from NAV??? (live update)
If you don't, update them and scan again, if you do, try downloading AVG ver6, it's free and I found it extremely good, it found viruses that NAV couldn't! I now run both and, fingers crossed, I have had no probs!

Let us know please!

Matt

Yes I keep the live updates done frequently and they are right up to date. It is just weird how some parts bring up that I have the virus and other parts say no. It is extremely frustrating to me.

Keep in the back of your head that virus programs occasionally give false virus alerts.

Katie...

if the trojan virus is in your system restore...

this is what you need to do...
1) find out what virus/trojan you have.
2) update your virus program.
3) download the trojan virus removal tool from norton.. at the following:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/tools.list.html
4) diable your system restore feature by doing the following:
To disable Windows XP System Restore:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click on My Computer and then click Properties.
3. Click the "System Restore" tab.
4. Check "Turn off system restore" or "Turn off system restore on all drives."
5. Click Apply, and then click OK.

run the removal tool in safe mode...

restart your system.. do a full scan. and rerun the removal tool.

then:
To enable Windows XP System Restore:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click on My Computer and then click Properties.
3. Click the "System Restore" tab.
4. Uncheck "Turn off system restore" or "Turn off system restore on all drives."
5. Click Apply, and then click OK.

there you have it...

all done

Further.. you can do the following:
to protect yourself and your computer:

1) update you antivirus software and run a full scan of your system.
if you do not have a antivirus program... go to http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_index.htm and download this very good free anti virus program.

2) use a software firewall... if you don't have one.. download the free version of zonealarm from:
http://www.zonelabs.com/

this will prevent him/her from accessing your computer.

3) go to http://www.majorgeek.com/index2.html and download their free program called ad-aware 5.71.
this will remove any spy-ware that is on your systm.

4) go to: http://www.finjan.com/
and down load SurfinGuard® Pro 5.7 - Beta.
SurfinGuard® Pro protects PC users from new, unknown Internet threats by monitoring and containing the behavior of downloaded progams and active content. SurfinGuard Pro runs active content (e.g., executables, ActiveX, scripts, Windows scripting files and Java) in a protected "sandbox" called the Safe Zone that automatically blocks potentially hostile actions.

Further... go to Norton's web site.. they may have a trojan removing tool for your particular virus.

I agree with Matt, go with AVG, Norton ....bah... it seems to sleep through half of the virus' that AVG-free picks up. Download 'The Cleaner' from www.moosoft.com it's shareware and has a 30(?) day trial, it will remove whatever trojan you have.
