I've had a few problems lately too. They seem to be associated with troj startpade.a, which shows up in C:\Windows\System32\ folder as a number.exe file (examples: 15496462.exe or
C:\WINNT\system32\69950503.exe like Matt J above). I've also seen this type of file with other trojans.Running trendmicro found them, but said they were "uncleanable." Instructions belowj that said to simply delete them. I have done that with each of those numbered.exe files with no problems... so assuming that any such similar files are NOT part of windows and can be safely deleted.
Two good online scanners (free):

I had about an hour of time where no matter what I did, windows would load ok, but my desktop screen was totally blank and I couldn't do anything in it it. Then after a lot of fooling around, the computer seemed fine. Today, for about an hour, my keyboard quit working and I had problems with mirc and other programs. After a lot of fooling around, it was suddenly ok again. Hard to say if I was actually "fixing" anything or if the trojan just works that way.
