Now it boots up and shuts down. Nothing in between either. XP Home was preloaded on my PC when I bought it(as-is from Best Buy), with out any recovery CDs. It won't boot from the recovery console at all,and I've tried every option. I have The XP Home Bootable disks, which let's me logon to windows in a strange type of dos,but I have no idea what exactly to change or how to change it. I haven't installed SP1, and I can't get to the desktop at all. Like I said it boots up then shuts itself down automatically. I can't get it to boot to safe mode either,it loads all the drivers then shuts down. I tried last known good configuration, that was the first thing I did after I messed it up. Still no change. Any ideas are welcome. Thanks.

Oh yeah - it worked fine until I tried to change the Welcome screen.

i think that you can remove the welcome screen in the Boot.ini file... on C. if you can get to it, check and see towards the end if there is part of a like with a backslash and a mention of the program you used to make the welcome screen. if so, delete it and try. good luck

Not sure how much help this will be, but I'll give it a shot. You said you boot up and it shuts down instantly? Does it shut down before you logon to an account? If so then it sounds like the new logonUI you installed is either corrupted or just produced by someone who overlooked something :-/

If thats the case then you need to replace the logonUI with your original in DOS if at all possible. In all honesty I havent had reason to explore this new DOS system XP uses so I'm honestly not sure if this is possible but I would assume it is, otherwise it seems pointless to even have DOS. Just navigate back to your C:\Windows\System32 directory and replace the file. You probably know this, but to be sure, the file you are looking for is logonui.exe

I really hope you have a clean backup of it somewhere. After you get things working again you may want to check out www.tgtsoft.com They have an excellent shareware program for changing your logons and themes.

Good luck, hope this helps at all.

I tried to remove the Welcome Screen and well, it was a disaster, tho I was at least able to get back in as administrator. But when I got back to my desktop it was all changed, all my icons were gone and it went back to the same screen you get when you first install XP Pro. That wonderful Bliss screen.
I know this doesn't help you but when you do get back in that's what you will see. Once you get back into your desktop you can do a system restore to the previous day and you will get everything back as you had it.
I for one will not try to fool with that again. Good Luck!
