Since you do not have network cards then burn your files to a DVD and then copy them to your new laptop.

External USB hard drive enclosure.

To prevent voiding any warranty.

How are you planning on performing the actual transfer? CD Burner, Floppies or network?

If none of the above then enlist the assistance of a qualified friend to remove the hard drive from the Win98 machine and properly install or connect it in/to the WinXP machine.

Dell's come with a good manual with good instructions for adding a secondary/slave hard drive.

The manual is on the supplied CD or can be downloaded from their site.

If the new Dell uses SATA drives whereas the old machine likely uses IDE then simply, temporarily disconnect the CD/DVD drive to connect the hard drive.
The transfer can be done with the case open and the old hard drive just hanging.

Once done; take out the hard drive and reconnect the CD/DVD drive.

The process is maybe even a little easier than it sounds above.

Firstly opening the case will void the warranty.

Secondly I think you will find your NEW Dell does have a RJ45 Network Port.

Install a Network Card in the OLD PC and by using a RJ45 Xover Ethernet cable network the two together.

XP comes with in-built 'Files and Settings Transfer' Wizard more details are available using the HELP Function on the Start Menu.

Both Computers should have USB ports just copy the Files to a USB Jump drive and then plug it into the New Computer and copy them to a folder of your choice.

You can't just copy Programs installed on Win98 to a New Computer, you will need to have the installation disk for the programs, also I assume that the new Computer is running WinXP so you will need to make sure the School programs will run on WinXP.

The reason you can't transfer programs by just moving the files over are:

1. There are registry entries formed when the programs are installed. Without these the programs will not run.

2. There are likely to be files around that are in one or more of the Windows folders and it is no easy task to find the ones you need.

As said, you need to "install" programs (unless they are very simple/basic programs consisting of just an .exe file) which were not "installed" in the first place.

I think you can use the transfer & settings wizard in xp. It will allow you to make a floppy to setup win 98. Save to a folder on the win 98 disk & burn to cd. Then take this to the xp disk.
