Is it possible to transfer my OS, Data from my current drive which seems to finally be ailing (after 6 years of use) to a new one I picked up?
I havent installed the new drive yet. Is there some software out there that makes this process painless.
The main reason I need to transfer instead of just reinstalling is that I have a lot of stuff not backed up. I have an antiquacated CDRW and I dont fancy have to burn and back up all my data on CDs and then putting them all back on the new drive. Although I guess I will if I have to. The other thing is that my Hard copy of WinXp got stolen.
Thanks for any advice.

Slave your HD to the new HD ( no need to bolt it in, just cable it & leave it outside the case ) & Copy ( right click on your stuff ) then Paste onto the new HD.
You may have a choice of jumper settings on the master HD, such as master with slave or ms.

THAT WON"T WORK WITH XP!! You nneed to use a program like Ghost or Ranish to CLONE the old drive. Link to follow.

"I have a lot of stuff not backed up"
I was mainly concentrating on this part of the question.
To copy the operating system & everything else ( with all it's possible problems ) this one is very good.

I think that what Johnw meant was FIRST install an operating system on the new drive then copy over all the data.
Chupa mentions "re-installing"... that is something he will have to do though... only data can be copied from one drive to another not programmes.
Once I thought I was wrong, now I'm not so sure!

using ghost or the drive manufacturers software it is perfectly possible to transfer the OS as well as Apps and Data.
You are just cloning the drive onto the new one. I generally put the new drive as secondary master (saves having to remember changing the jumpers) then when the clone job is complete, just take out the orignal and replace with the new drive.
BTW it helps if you set Bios to autodetect the hard drives before you hook them up . . . .
Woof
Always proof-read carefully to see if you any words out.

Well it worked, and everything is working fine. The os boots up from the new drive with the old drive disabled.
Just wondering isnt a Sata 300mbs 8mg casche hdd supposed to be faster then an IDE 7200rpm standard hdd? Cause it doesnt seem faster at all. Boot up is the same speed. Pulling up files in the start menue is the same. Do I not have it setup correctly or something?
Thanks.
