Can anyone help adjust my mouse so that it does not act on its own?

ie) if the mouse pointer is left pointing to a icon it will open that program. I find this to be very frustrating because it opens programs that I don't want opened and sometimes moves thing that I don't want moved and sometimes I get unwanted created shortcuts

This is a Dell laptop that has a Synaptic PS/2 onboard pointing device.

Any iders on how to get it not to do that?

two solutions, both i've used since i can't stand touchpads. Use a mouse and disable the touchpad. Or you can adjust the touchpad's sensitivity through synaptic's software.
