Touchpad mouse clicks on its own

Can anyone help adjust my mouse so that it does not act on its own?
ie) if the mouse pointer is left pointing to a icon it will open that program. I find this to be very frustrating because it opens programs that I don't want opened and sometimes moves thing that I don't want moved and sometimes I get unwanted created shortcuts
This is a Dell laptop that has a Synaptic PS/2 onboard pointing device.

two solutions, both i've used since i can't stand touchpads. Use a mouse and disable the touchpad. Or you can adjust the touchpad's sensitivity through synaptic's software.

There is a hover setting maybe. See the xp's help and support pages for hover or mouse or follow focus.
