I have a Toshiba Satellite A215-S5824 that came with Vista, the scourge of the earth; as well as AMD Athlon 64x2, Dual-Core Processor TK-57 1.90 GHz, 896 MB of RAM.
Before attempting to downgrade to XP Pro, I asked Toshiba tech support where I could get xp drivers to which they quite rudely replied that they do not support other operating systems. I was able to find a complete list of drivers for the A210 at www.notebook-drivers.com.
I was able to get everything to work smoothly except audio. In Control Panel/Sounds & Audio Devices it simply states that there is "NO AUDIO DEVICE" with all options greyed out.
Also in the DEVICE MANAGER there is one apparant problem listed only as "Other Devices... PCI DEVICE"
I have installed, un-installed, and re-installed a number of versions of the RealTek High Definition Audio drivers, to no avail.
Under SOUND, VIDEO AND GAME CONTROLLERS in the DEVICE MANAGER is listed as follows (without yellow exclamation) "AUDIO CODECS, LEGACY AUDIO DRIVERS, LEGACY VIDEO CAPTURE DEVICES, MEDIA CONTROL DEVICES, VIDEO CODECS".
Could the LEGACY AUDIO DRIVERS have something to do with this? I see no information anywhere else (including Toshiba provided info) about LEGACY.
I hope I have provided enough information. I am so frustrated and would be eternally grateful for any assistance offered.

Go to Toshiba's web site. Look up the model laptop you have. Once you get on the main page for it, you should have links available for "downloads" which should include drivers etc.
At least, 3 or so yr's back when I used to fix Toshiba's, drivers were available.

The Vista Package listed at the above address actually includes the W2K/XP WDM Drivers......................

Curt R wrote Go to Toshiba's web site..
Don't bother going there to seek drivers for XP. It will only waste your time.
The Windows Vista Downgrade Rights POSTED on Toshiba web site stated the following:
Downgrade rights ONLY applies to machines that comes pre-installed with Windows Vista Ultimate and Windows Vista Business. Other versions of Windows Vista does not apply.
BTW the instigator of this rule is M$ not Toshiba. Toshiba (and other major OEM system builders) had no choice but to follow the rules set forth by Redmond as conditions for preinstalling Windows operating system. In other word who would buy computers with no software preloaded?

I am still confused as to why people buy any OEM computer with Vista pre-installed when they really want to run WinXP.
Some drivers do not even exist. HD realtek sound drivers for instance are problematic.
I suggest you just learn to live with Vista.
"I was able to find a complete list of drivers for the A210 at www.notebook-drivers.com". Are are sure those drivers will be fully compatible.

OtheHill... The reason "people buy any OEM computer with Vista pre-installed when they really want to run WinXP" is the same reason people like myself drive a 1990 Corsica and not a 2008 Honda - we cannot afford to be picky. This was $400 compared to the $700-800 I could have paid for a Dell if that whole lottery thing had panned out ;)
Aside from that - thank you all for trying to help. I will keep working on it and eventually figure it out.

Could I ask where and when you bought that laptop for $400?
I have looked around and even on eBay the best price I found was more than that. Actually it appears that a laptop with similiar specs and sold with WinXP home from Dell if similiar in price to the pricing I find for the unit you have.
Additionally, you need to count the cost of WinXP in the mix.
I didn't shp further but I do know at least one other brand of laptop that can be purchased with WinXP pre-installed.

Try using SIW.exe to determine more details on the sound chip. Realtek makes literally hundreds of different sound chips. Realtek has many different chip models listed on thier site but you need additional info on what your have. I am not sure SIW will yield anything more than you have. I have a Readtek HD chip on my desktop system and SIW DOES give additional info. At any rate SIW.exe is a really neat utility. Find it below. Get the standalone version.

OtheHill - I got it at Best Buy on sale a few weeks ago (when I looked at their site yesterday, they didn't have this model anymore). Living on student loans and spending so much time on campus at my age, I couldn't pass it up but kind of wish I had now. :(
Aside from Vista it seems like a pretty good machine. I have always been a Dell user in the past so I'm not accustomed to having problems. I couldn't find anything from them less than $700.00. I probably just picked the wrong days to price them.
I did try the SIW program - good thing to have - but it doesn't show the card or driver either.
A lot of info about the Legacy though. Do you know if that is just some standard unrelated windows driver?
My son is doing some Realtek research for me now too - maybe he will have some luck where I haven't.
Thanks :)

Did you expand the hardware list and then expand the sound. Play with SIW a bit and you will find more info. My realtek gives me over 50 lines of details. Click the plus signs on the left to expand each level.

Hardware expanded nothing appears audio related... so... devices expanded the only thing is "Sound, video and game contollers" which contains the following:
Media Control Devices
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Video Codecs
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio DriversI looked at the individual info for each of those and found nothing realtek related.
Weird - or maybe not. I think I am losing brain cells by the minute.
I appreciate the time you are spending trying to help me :) :) :)

When I look at the specs page (why I didn't do that before I don't know) it provides details about the other aspects of the machine but not the audio - so now I wonder if it is even a realtek to begin with.

I don't have much experience with integrated stuff so maybe that's normal.

I gave you a link in an earlier response, the VISTA Sound/Audio Package includes the XP WDM Drivers. Yes it is REALTEK Hi Def Audio!!

Bakers - I have installed/uninstalled/reinstalled the driver from that very link - same results as all others - a whole lot of nothing.
Thank you though... I do appreciate the help :)

Did you try using SIW as I described? To verify you are performing the same operation as I described, try on other litings. Not all items are new in the list. SIW should yield some info on some things, even if not the Realtek chip.
A few months ago there was another person with I think the same hardware you have. They eventually got some of the features of the sound chip working but not all. Hopefully you will have better luck.

OtheHill - I have expanded everything in SIW and I'm just not seeing anything that looks relevant aside from what I mentioned in response number 10. I probably just don't know what I am looking for.
I feel more stupid with each click. It must be time to take a break. Too bad I don't drink anymore ;)

After opening SIW expand Devices, under Hardware. Then expand Sound, video and game controllers. Then double click on the Realtek listing. You should then get a bunch of information to use at the Realtek site to help identify the exact chip. If that chip is being used in any desktop MBoard there may be a driver available for WinXP.

In SIW there is not a Realtek listing under Sound, video and game controllers. Only these...
Media Control Devices
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Video Codecs
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers

Media Control Devices has nothing else under it (no plus sign - just the little speaker icon) and the info page on the right hand side says this stuff...

I located the detailed spec for your exact model of laptop from Toshiba. They don't list anything for a sound chip. How did you determine you have a Realtek chip?

It's on the list of vista driver downloads for this model on the toshiba website.
So if not Realtek, then what kind of driver am I needing? Any ideas?
I feel like a dope.

I don't know the answer to that question. Below is the link to the Toshiba site. Click on the detailed specs at the left side and download them to your desktop.

The chipset is an AMD M690V
That chipset has the sound integrated into it. Below is a link.
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors...
Note under Multiple Display Features
Integrated HD Audio controller for HDMI audio data *
However the asterisk indicates - * Not applicable to the AMD M690VSo, there is another chipset aboard the MBoard that may handle the sound, network, modem. Etc.
For whatever reason, Toshiba didn’t see fit to give any details.
You may be able to gather some information by looking at the manual or the drivers might give a hint.

Bakers is correct that you do have a Realtek audio chip. I don't know if the link Bakers provided is the correct driver of not. It may be that you need to use the upgrade driver option or you may need a different driver. I did find something on the Realtek site that may help. Link is below.
editThere are two driver files that appear to be applicable. I suggest you look at the Read Me file prior to attempting any install. The second less obvious file is the ATI file.

Hello, I have the same laptop and I also want to go back to XP. Where did you get the Xp drivers for the video, lan and other devices??? That help would be greatly appreciated
