Most toolbars such as Yahoo & Google are spyware. Don't believe me? Try reading their privacy policies. You'd be better off without them.

jam, I know you don't agree with my methods but I like the toolbars and just use the heck out of Ccleaner.

You need to play around a bit with your whole screen. Are you using IE or another browser? If IE, which version? If you are not sure just read the text in the very top bar.

the problem is that the ONLY text in the top bar is search, by the magnifying glass, and favorites, by the star. there is no other text there.
i'm using ie 6 because i don't want the seven. on some sites, my whole screen is screwed up with various things overlapping and so forth.
is it all part of the same problem, and if so, how do i cure it?

iamjumbo< Go to the link below and under the letter "T" scroll down to "Toolbar - Missing" and download the "Toolbar Repair Utility" then run it. It very well may correct your problem.

To change items in the Yahoo toolbar you can right click on a blank part of the bar and elect add/edit.

In Google all you do is drag the icon off the toolbar and release down below to remove.

In IE you may need to unlock the toolbar before you can change anything. Right click an empty spot on the bar and you should see a "lock the toolbar" choice that may be checked.

would it be simpler, or can you do it, to just add the back and forward button to the text toolbar with the file, edit, tools, etc, instead of trying to change the toolbar?
when i right click on the toolbar, i get the box with standard buttons, address bar, etc. there is no edit or anything

I thought you wanted to remove stuff as well as add it.

You need to find a spot on the toolbar that has nothing on it or you will get the drop down you are getting. Try different spots. If the icon you are near is highlighted then it isn't going to work. Try going on the extreme top or bottom.

iamjumbo, "it has the refresh, home, search, favorites, etc, but does not have the file, tools, view etc."

The Menu Bar at the top should have File, Edit, View, Favorites,Tools & Help.

To add the back and forward buttons to the Tool Bar which is the Bar under the Menu Bar you would right click an empty space on the Tool Bar, Unlock the toolbars then choose Customize then in the left pane (Available tool bar buttons) hilite the Back button, and using the Add arrow button move it to the right pane (Current toolbar buttons). Do the same for the Forward button. Let us know how you're making out with this.

i don't know what it's trip is. when i do that with the icon bar, it has the customize, and the box on the left only has map drive, disconnct, folder, full screen, size, cut, copy, paste, encoding and print preview.
when i right click and uncheck the standard buttons, and i get the file, edit etc, if i right click that one, there is no customize in that box.

well, i just discovered something.
in that bar, but to the far right, there is a square box with file. there is a skinny box between that and the microsoft flag. when you click on that, a window drops down with the edit, view, tools, etc.
knowing that now will ameliorate my problem, but that is not how it used to be, and i would like it to be right.
would you have any idea how that occurred, and how i can fix it back?

iamjumbo, Right click the Toolbar and unlock it. Now to the left of File on the upper Menu Bar you''ll see either a dotted verticle line or a line that looks like a handle. Move your cursor over that line till it turns into a 2 sided arrow, hold you left mouse button down and drag to the right and possibly downwards. You will have to experiment with it until you have it the way you want. It's hard to explain not being at your computer but if you do the above you should be able to get it the way you want it. After you do Lock the Toolbar again.
