Justin:

A quick note to say Hi. Hope you're doing well.

Question: Whatever happened to KTTD, Kevin The Tech Dude? He was your evening moderator here at CN years ago, when XpUser, per (then using a different name), and I were helping users untangle their XP problems.

Like you, he ran a tight ship on his watch, never hesitating to bounce or outright ban a user who abused the site, or posted blatantly incorrect information.

Credit must be given, also, to the regular CN members who were online in those days. When someone got way out of line, the membership would converge on him with posts that would make the offender flee with embarrassment, his dignity in tatters.

Just wondering about some of the old gang (see posts below).

I always remember CN fondly, though I'm not able to stop by as often as I'd like. The pleasure was twofold:

Learning valuable information from others, and helping others with that information. 8-)

Sincerely, Solarian

Hey,

Yes, we all remember the old times fondly, and KTTD was a good moderator. Honestly, I'm not sure what happened to him. I guess he went his own way.

While he and I did talk about moderating issues on the site a fair amount, we were not in constant communication. I generally let him do his own thing until there was a problem. When he stopped moderating, I just stopped hearing from him. He definitely did not have a "clean break" with the site or his involvement. Its more like he slowly left over time. For that reason, other members might actually know what happened to him better than I do.

Personally, speaking as one of the "old guard" I always felt that Kevin got a tad carried away with power as time went by although he and I always seemed to get along OK.

We emailed a few times after he left CN, but then the emails just stopped.

I remember a few of the old members that no longer come around, and per, Wombat and Lurkswithin still show up occasionally and we've remained in contact.

Hey Solarian,

I remember the times when you and per and XpUser would come on-board to hash out some issues...I must say that those were some of the better days of CN.

KTTD had his ups and downs but I have to agree that he sometimes got a bit carried away with the ban button.

Although he never banned me he would strike a whole thread instead of just the offending posts and we lost some valuable information from his doing so. I think he just got burned out, but am not sure. His actions though got pretty erratic. But then so do mine from time to time...LOL

Sincere thanks to all who wrote back. I want to reply to each of you, individually. At the moment, I'm taking a break from working on a client's PC who thought that installing two firewalls AND two antivirus utililities would double his protection when online. 8-(

I know I don't have to explain to any of you that this merely reduced the functionality of his PC to near zero. The registry hive looks like it was hit by a sawed-off shotgun. I'm astounded that the PC booted at all. Most boxes in this condition, after a cold start, would have stayed frozen to a black screen.

The owner has the original set of OEM disks. Good thing! The only way out of this abortion is to reinstall the entire operating system.

Justin:

Thanks for writing back. And for creating Computing.net itself so many years ago. When I became a member in those days, CN became a real part of my computing life. I couldn't wait to get off work, come home, and log onto the site. I was back with friends! Friends whose passionate interest in computers matched my own. We all knew each other; the site had a special feel. I realize that may sound corny, but it's true nonetheless.

You created a space where those with similar interests could share their enthusiasm for a growing technology, and make friendships in the bargain. That's no small accomplishment, sir.

May Computing.net continue to grow and prosper!

Regarding KTTD, you wrote: "We emailed a few times after he left CN, but then the emails just stopped."

I had exactly the same experience. KTTD and I kept in touch through his several Hotmail addresses (long before Gmail even existed). Then, without explanation or warning, his emails simply stopped.

Like Scotty beamed him up from the Enterprise and he vanished into the Galaxy with the rest of the Star Trek crew. 8-)

lurkswithin:

Thank you for the kind words regarding the old Triangle: XpUser, per, and me. We had a lot of fun helping out XP users in those days; not to mention the challenges we ourselves faced with an operating system which was barely a year old.

Back then, Service Pack 1 was just a rumor. XP had some real issues although, looking back, not as severe as Vista users are experiencing today.

When I'm able to stop by Computing.net, I make it a point of reading your posts when I see lurkswithin. You always offer helpful and accurate advice to those who need assistance. You're a real asset to CN; it's members are fortunate to have you.

As well as the help offered by Musky, Tufenuf, Jennifer SUMN, XpUser, per, and many others.

Computing.net is in good hands. 8-)

Peace, Solarian

Hi Triangle Buddy Solarian -

Forgive my late reply to this thread. I just wanted to add here that you are not the only one who asked about KTTD. Per has in THIS 2007 thread. If I recall it correctly, KTTD moved from Maryland to Maine in order to be near his daughter. Things may not have worked out well for KTTD then out of the blue he posted the following thread back in 2005.

Anyone miss me?

It was one of his very last. I guess he got burned out and never have recovered from it.

Hi Solarian. Really good to hear from you. I too have dropped out lately. I recall when I first brought the Gmail invites to the forum Kevin was worried google would steal your info and abduct your children. I inadvertantly sent him 2 invites. A week later he was bragging he had 7 Gmail accts. LOL!
Take care buddy.

PER!

Great to hear from you after so long.

It seems miraculous that you, XpUser, and I are on the same thread after so long. In the old days, that was almost a rule. To have the Triangle do it again, is a gift from the past.

How are things in CA? Every time I see a news report about the fires in California, I wonder how you're doing.

Last time we talked through CN, you were either cleaning up after a mudslide or worried about the next one to come. That same summer, I was in Tampa, bailing out water from my home: 4 different hurricanes brushed the Bay Area in roughly one month's time. Never knew what we did to piss Her off, but Mother Nature gave us Floridians a crash course in water management. 8-)

Hope she's been kinder to you in CA, dealing with those forest fires.

I was once married to a California girl who could never understand how native Floridians could deal so calmly with a hurricane: she was terrified of hurricanes.

I could never understand how calmly she spoke about the earthquakes she'd been through in California: I'm terrified of earthquakes.

Hey, give this old boy a hurricane - I know what I'm dealing with. I'd rather be blown into the Gulf of Mexico - I'm a pretty good swimmer - than be swallowed up by a giant crack in the earth. 8-)

Per, take care of yourself. I'll keep in touch.

Per:

Jeez! I always have both of my PCs online. This one's my main box, the other (nearly identical) is my test PC for evaluating new software. When not used for that purpose, it's set to a current news site. . .

Almost simultaneously with your post about the Los Angeles earthquake, I glanced at the test box monitor and saw the news flash: "Epicenter Chino Hills."

Hopefully, you're away from that area. It's been a long time, but I seem to remember you saying that you were closer to San Diego than LA. Can't be certain - too many years have passed 8-)

Keep safe.

I would think that two anti-virus programs, and two firewalls would more than QUADRUPLE your system protection. ;)

KTTD was here when I first came to this site; not sure when that was. It's hard to believe it's been over a year since per posted that thread asking again if anyone knows where he is.

Hope not lost in space...

I finally located another thread posted by KTTD on August 14, 2005. The thread itself (Message 139526) has been deleted for some reason but here it goes ...

Subject: I was burnt out but I'm back...

Well I am gonna at least make an effort being that the 2006 is coming up and that will mean that Computing.Net has been around for 10 yrs.

So, with that said. I am gonna creep back into the boards.

Responding to your posts from Tampa, here at the Suds Theater (Beer, Barbecue, Best movies in South Tampa). Left Fort Myers a few hours ago to take care of business in Sarasota. Since Sarasota's less than an hour from Tampa (my home town), I decided to drop by the Bay Area and visit with old friends.

Thanks for your research, posting past writings by KTTD himself. Reading them jogged and refreshed my memory: I'd read those words before, but forgot about them over the passage of time.

Yes, it's apparent he had a crisis in his life that he had to deal with. Even after these many years, I sincerely wish he has solved whatever it was that troubled him. He was a family man. No doubt, his problems were part of that. Something which nearly all of us has had to deal with at one time or another.

I know I'm sounding obvious, but I'll say it anyway: Family issues are the toughest to deal with because they are closest to the heart. Solving computer problems are a piece of cake by comparison. No emotions are needed. 8-)

Thanks again for posting what you found from KTTD. Hopefully, he's doing well.

In your post above you wrote: ". . .im sure ive asked some stupid questions. . ."

There is no such thing as a stupid question, sir. Only bad decisions which were made because that person was too proud to ask. If I had a dollar for every "stupid" question I've asked since pursuing my interest in computers, I'd be in the Virgin Islands now: cash in the bank, my favorite cocktail in one hand, a beautiful woman on the other.

Keep asking.

____________

Musky:

Though I never received a picture of KTTD's girlfriend, he mentioned her in our email correspondence. Again, so much time has passed, it's nearly impossible to remember what he wrote. Frankly, even if I could remember, I probably wouldn't mention it, since it was a private communication.

Please don't infer that I object to you writing about the photo he sent to you. He, obviously, sent it because he wanted to; ultimately his decision to make.

When I said he was a family man, what I do remember is the concern he had about his young daughter. It was genuine and heartfelt. To me, that made him a family man.
