I'm working on a friends HP that has slowed down considerably. I've done most of the obvious tweaks and have found something puzzeling. In My Documents there are thousands, I mean thousands, of TMP files. Can some one enlighten me on why/how they got there? I'm in the process of deleting them but the indicater says 1 hr. 40 min to go. Please advise.

Those are probably temporary internet files.
I don't know what tweaks are obvious to you but emptying the temp and Internet temp files is one of the most obvious. Try CCleaner. I doubt it will take the kind of time you report when using CCleaner.
While in IE go to tools> internet options> settings. I set to the lowest possible. Take note while there that you can delete temporary internet files and cookies from there. Those are the same tmp files you asked about.
Probably should setup a program or two to remove spyware/ malware.

"O" I had already done as you suggested prior to discovering all the TMP files in the Documents. I've already used SpyBot and Adaware etc. and there they were. I was just wondering what could have changed/happened to put them there? Is there a setting some place for TMP files that this person may have accidently changed causing them to be stored in Documents?

Appears also to give information about creating a BAT file that would delete all those TMP files for you.

Chuck, there's seems to be a problem with the computing.net/security thread. I've tried to open it on three different PC's and it will freeze for a time and then I get knocked off line. Has anyone else reportred this?

The security forum is operating fine. That link doesn't seem to want to load though.

The Security Link works fine for me.
Frankly, with your problems, the easiest to do is to format and reinstall. I would not fight it.

Thanks all, I got it taken care of. I couldn't format and reinstall because the owner did not want to go that route. I removed the Java program and reinstalled new version. Used Adaware, Spybot, Windows Defender and finished off with HJT. Everything seems okay, at least for now. Again, thanks you all for your participation.
