I have just spent all night and day on a piece of music which is my livelihood! I turned on my computer this evening, it said 'disks need to be checked for consistancy' so it did that then when it started. The 'Reason song file' has been changed to tmp08.tmp. I tried changing extension back to .rns but still won't open. It says 'this is a support file and cannot be opened directly' I haven't turned it off since just in case. Please help as I only have hours to get this to a studio!!! thanks!

Bobby

Is the file the actual music file? Does it play if you associate it with a player?

If so, try save as and rename it using the correct file extension.

Right click on the file and choose properties. See if the file size is what you would expect. While there un-tick read only if marked as such.

Try the search function in the Start menu to see if the original file is still residing somewhere.

If you are sure the file marked as a .tmp file is your music file make a copy of it and save to optical disk.

Lastly, I am sure you don't need to hear this now, but you should always create backups of any files you wish to retain.

YOu're right. I do backup but hadn't for 24hrs this time. Read only is unticked. IT is the correct file size so I'm sure the audio is there somewhere. What's an optical disk? I've got external hard drives and usb drives? And once I've copied it to that where should I go from there?

The 'player' is a program called Reason. The properties said 'opens with - unknown program' so I changed that to -opens with Reason. I also changed the extension to .rns but it still recognises it as a temporary file not a Reason Project file.

Thanks for your reply!

Copy to the desktop from the optical disk and then try renaming it.

If you're still there thanks for that. I've tried that and also I tried opening it with notepad and wordpad then saving as 'all files' which worked...as in the .tmp file was returned to it's state as a Reason song file which is .rns
Problem is though when I try to open it with the program Reason it says 'file has a bad format and can not be loaded' I'm nearly in tears!

When you created the file it was on the Hard drive wasn't it? What happened to that copy? Did you cut and paste to optical disk?

Sorry no I did copy it so I have a few copies on external drives and I also still have the original .tmp file on the hard drive. It's a laptop. Programs on c: partition and music files on D: I can't understand why if all the data is there (it appears to be) why I can't open it with the program. Thanks so much for helping.

In case you are still checking here Bobby. Music, photo, video files usually have a header at the beginning of the file with information about the format, length, etc. It sounds like that header might be corrupted. Maybe the people at 'Reason' can help to repair the file.

Thanks! When I open the .tmp in notepad. It actually says Propellerhead Reason Song File...

Is that the header? (probably showing my ignorance now!) I think I'll contact Reason as you say, Thanks again. I won't give up hope.
I also searched the file name tmp8.tmp and it's linking very often to malware and virus. But I've scanned everything the registry and all files and nothing suspect is appearing.

Cheers. Rob
