Comment:

A program called TVTMD.exe (supposedly a memory display, which would be useless in XP anyhow) keeps popping up in my Windows (C:\Windows\) folder and running. I have ZoneAlarm, AdAware, and SpyBot SearchAndDestroy installed, and have run scans, but show no trojans or viruses. When it (TVTMD) start running, I kill the process tree, delete the app, and THE NEXT DAY the app pops up again.

I installed (about a week back) EMS FreeSurfer to kill popups, and AVG (Free Edition) to scan for viruses. Suspect one of these may be downloading and installing the app (using the IE backplane perhaps), but I'm of course not sure on that.

This is the first time I have ever seen an app pop up on my system that I have deleted, I HAVE NOT DOWNLOADED, and starts running 'on its own'.

Any thoughts/ideas/experience on this?

Help greatly appreciated.

Joe

you should trace the program, or boot your computer to safe mode and see if that tmd is poping up
if it didn't pop up in safe mode, then its one of your applications
there is another way, go into windows folder, right click on that tmd.exe file, go to properties and you can see the info for that specific file

run msconfig.exe, and under startup, search for anything that may lead to your suspect file. Then uncheck that entry and reboot.

To the three above:

(ryan) It's NOT part of a regular Windows install - sure of that. Nor would it be necessary - Exhibit A is the existence of the Task Manager (which would make a 'taskbar memory display' useless) (not to mention the fact I haven't seen it in XP until this week - have had XP loaded for almost a year now). There is also a folder that pops up hand-in-hand with the app - MemoryMaker - which is obviously not from MS.

Uninstalled EMS FreeSurfer and AVG, and it hasn't popped up (yet) today, so I believe it was one of those two.

(Mike) Thanks - did this with TweakAll two days back (three different times). BUT, each time I did it, after reboot, it popped back up. Think the uninstalls I did worked - will post in another day or two and confirm.

Thanks for the help - appreciate it

Joe
