Windows file search is too limited. Can anyone suggest a low cost alternative program? Thanks.

Do you use the three sets of Double Arrows - especially the Advanced Options?

One of the fastest searches of your HD(s) is Ava find. It's almost instantaneous. http://www.think-less-do-more.com/avafind/

I want to do more complicated searches, for example Boolean.

Thanks, per and Tonto.

Google desktop search is an external-based search engine. If it suit your need, it's good for you. Personally my HD is my private property. I'd never allow anyone outside to search files for me on my own HD.

Where did you get your info on Google desktop ... it is not web based (or even external unless you are running it from a mapped drive)The data is stored on your system and the accessed data is also stored on your system with no link to the outside world (even system's without a network or internet connection can use this program)
Yes it opens in a browser window and work's like a browser window but makes no use of the internet it is simply an explorer window
The only security issues are that the program is to good at what it does (indexing files for future referance a criminal could access any file you access ;if you are silly enough to give them unrestricted physical access and finding that data is very user search freindly ... But that is why you use it in the first place isn't it and if you useall the normal security protection you and your data are fully protected !!!

SEARCH ENGINE WATCH !

PC WORLD RERVIEW !

WASHINGTON POST REVIEW !

Behind the scenes
Now, before you start worrying about the results of a local search--or indeed your local files--being sent off to Google, read on. What's actually going on is that the local Google Desktop server is intercepting any Google web searches, passing them on to Google.com in your stead, and running the same search against your computer's local index. It's then intercepting the Web search results as they come back from Google, pasting in local finds, and presenting it to you in your browser as a cohesive whole.

All work involving your local data is done on your computer. Neither your filenames nor your files themselves are ever sent on to Google.com.

For more on Google Desktop and privacy, right-click the Google Desktop taskbar swirl, select About, and click the Privacy link.

I have yet to find any problem or security issue try it you you might just like it !!!

HI IamBiGePaNtS,

I appreciate your taking the time to write your lengthy post above. My feelings about Google Desktop search has not changed for the mere reason how it works.

Hi Mesich,

Good morning We better meet get together right now in Starbucks in NYC before the Blizzard hits us later tonight (1 foot of snow anticipated).

Thanks for posting the article you cited in your last post:

Google Copies Your Hard Drive - Government Smiles in Anticipation.

This article reinforce my long time convictions & stances when I tell friends and customers to never ever install and use Google Desktop.

Good Morning XpUser,

Sounds very inviting, but I don't believe I can make it there and out before the storm. Right now it is to the south of us and it appears we shall just miss it.

I tell my clients the same thing, not just Google but with them all.

Best Regards,
Mesich

Personally I do not store anything that involves government secrets or any personal thing financial on a networked computer. The computer i do all my bookkeeping on is a stand alone machine. so .. let google search away!

best of luck Frank :

your right about your concern's I personally don't need access to my personal computer anywhere but when I am using it !

So that said would not need the "remote desktop access" turned on and so far as google tracking my search data don't fool yourself ... EVERY SEARCH ENGINE DOES !!!

My personal data (if I wanted search abilities avaiable from another computer)being stored along with everyone elses in the world (or even a mere 8 % of the computer's in the world)would be an enormous expence (at least billion's and billions of terrabites of data) for any storage company to offer for free ... even google (side note Google bought napster and they offer a p2p service there but all the data is stored on the host machine ... not google vault's)

So just what is stored for free and for how long (for ever is along time) if it is that important for someone to look at my old wedding photo's or pic's of my dog licking his naughty bit's than have at er' or if someone want's to browse the billion's of word document's for gramatical error's and belive that they will find anything either accessable ,unprotected ,or not encrypted that is not a spoof and was allowed to be added to the outside storage box ... well both parties involved deserve to access the file

(I wouldn't put my privacy out there for the whole world and not use protection any more then I would put my life out there without at least the same level of protection !!)
