I did a clean install of XP pro. I have a cable modem. The problem I am having is that most regular web sites are called up fine but when I try windows update, or I'm trying to log onto Mirc the connection is timing out. What could be causing this?

your XP firewall! at least this is what was stopping me logging on to mIRC! disable it and try again! ZA was fine, I didn't even have to change any settings with it!
