My icons on the start bar and thumbnail icons appear to be corrupt and display the wrong icons for the wrong programs, plus they are displayed shifted over a few pixels. This is for all programs and I can change them back using properties, but they soon return to they're original state. I really don't want to have to re-install windows XP again!! Can anyone help??? please.

Deleting the IconCache.db might help as it will clean-out and rebuild itself upon rebooting. You can also delete it then create a new text file with the same name, leave it empty and put a Read Only attrib on it and reboot. This I've done for years from 95 [ShellIconCache] to XP [now named IconCache.db] and seems to stop Windows stuffing around with icons. The IconCache.db file is located in your : \Doc&Sets\username\Local Settings\App.Data folder. A reformat is a bit drastic just for crappy icons but I can understand it though, can be very annoying.
