Hello folks...
This is a continuation of a previous thread; the link is above. I figured I'd start a new one because that older one is buried now.
Is anyone else still experiencing these annoying EchoTopic pop-up ads on this website? I am continually being invaded by these damn intrusive "in your face" EchoTopic ads. Some people replied in the previous thread to keep their mouse pointer towards the righthand side... that does indeed work nicely, but I sometimes forget. You'll know what I mean about forgetting when you reach your senior years too, lol..
Another reply was to add something to the hosts file list. I haven't looked into that yet because the last time I did I somehow botched things up where I accidentally disabled the "backspace" key of my keyboard. I still don't know how or what I did... that's why I was hoping to leave the hosts file alone.
In the last thread, Justin Weber was going to check with the person from EchoTopic to inquire why people cannot opt out of their intrusive ads. But I haven't heard of anything being corrected as of yet.
I was surprised that my previous thread had so many replies. That tells me that I certainly am not alone in wanting to get rid of these damn ads once and for all. Plus I'll bet my shirt that the last thread had much interest amongst many people who would rather remain silent and not rock the boat.
I was actually surprised that nobody told me to jump in the water, lol.. But I think I worded it in a sincere way and it was definitely not meant to taken in a angry or negative way.So... the question... Has anyone figured out how to opt out and finally get rid of them once and for all?
And if by chance Justin Weber reads this, any chance that the folks from EchoTopic can look into this and see why the opt-out link does not work? Many thanks in advance...
Happy Father's Day to all the dads..

try this, go to google.
type in pow
analogx site has a really good ad popper. i use it all the time.
once you pop it, its gone forever.

Right on OtheHill!
Gimme_Shelter_1969,
Ask yourself the following quiz
Do I want this site to be free of charge to access, to post, to share, & to learn?
If the answer is yes, learn to live with it.
If I remember it correctly, Justin asked everyone at one time if we were willing to pay subscription to access this site. He explained that it cost a lot of money to run the site server, pay electricity bill, domain fees, etc. The members consensus was that we either didn't want to or couldn't afford it. So he resolved the issue by allowing advertisements on the site that help cover the site expenses. Is this a problem for you?
BTW Happy Father's Day to everyone.

I don't think this is so much about money. Furthermore, traffic is what generates lucrative ad revenue, so the site needs us about as much as we need the site.
These days, ads are omnipresent on the web & people tend to understand & accept the arrangement, what many do detest is the highly intrusive method of delivering some of the ads.
My gripe perhaps with this thread is that the OP's issue was resolved in his former thread. I strongly doubt anything new is going to come out of this thread except a rehash of what was prescribed in the former post.

If using IE, put this site in your restricted sites in the internet options thus not letting it run java script. You will not have a problem any more with the pop up thingy's.

I think you just have to go ahead and try something.
Just started my old W98SE after some months and found some new ones popping up. I had a look at what they were about and put this in hosts:
127.0.0.1 ctxtad.tribalfusion.com
(tribalfusion.com was already present)
Same thing in Restricted Sites should work too as given by others.
As for the politics, well sure the adds pay for the website. Having said that it is probably only the regulars or specific interested parties that knock them out and they've all seen them before anyhow. All you need is Google to find out how to get round these sort of things so it's not exactly some technical secret.
All the other posters have more serious problems they are reporting and probably don't come here enough to worry about them anyway. It's not as if we are blocking them from the website, so there will still be plenty of viewers.

Re hosts backspace problem you mentioned. When using hosts, if you backspace you will sometimes go back to your local hosts (a previous ad rejection to 127.0.0.1 which is "nowhere"). It might therefore look as if the browser backspace feature has stopped working.
The way around that is to use eDexter (freebie). This acts rather like a proxy server, which it goes back to instead of localhosts. It works fine, with no backspace issues.
I use eDexter for that very reason rather than just replacing missing adverts. Strangely, the fact that eDexter cures this backspace issue no longer gets mentioned on their website.DerekW

Or use Ad Muncher as I do.
Ad Muncher Usage Statistics for v4.7 Build 27105/1610

Go here http://ctxt.tribalfusion.com/ctxt/w... and near the bottom is a link to "opt out" of seeing the pop-up windows ads on Computing.net. The next time you visit, they will be gone. Quite simple really.
It's a good day when you learn something

Yep, that's right Dan but apparently the poster reckoned it didn't work. If you renew your site cookies, or don't keep them, the adds will come back again next visit (which might be the posters problem).
DerekW

I just block them with my router.
Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

With so many ways suggested (including those on the previous link) I should think the poster should find one that does the trick now.
How about it "Gimme_Shelter_1969"?
Don't just vanish on us this time.DerekW

putting 127.0.0.1 ctxtad.tribalfusion.com into my HOSTS file worked. Yay. The thing that bugged me about these popups is that the "search" terms were too vague to make any sense. Also the ads at the top of each page are enough to satisfy me as to contributing to viewing ads to help support computing.net
Compaq Presario SR1720NX Desktop Computer
AT&T SBC Yahoo DSL Home
Linksys Router/2 computers

As Dan Penny suggested, do the "opt out" thing. It does work. I did it after your last post and am not bugged by these ads. Please post back and let us know how you made out.

Yep terii the opt out works just fine if you retain your site cookies.
It's pointless the poster keep raising the same issue then not coming back to the threads (although I accept it's still early days for this particular one).

Hello friends.. Sorry about this late reply; I have a lot of doctor appts here... I am under the weather.
Anyways, I have again tried the "opt out" on the webpage of EchoTopic... it will not work for me. I am now wondering if my browser is set wrong because as soon as I go to that EchoTopic site, it flags it as a "restricted site" 9way down by my taskbar & clock).
I now wonder if that is what is preventing me from opting out.....Many thanks to all who answered with methods to try; I will experiment with these later today when I get back home from some damn medical tests today.
Thanks for not being snippy & snotty to me for asking perhaps a dumb question. But I guess we all have our own learning levels and difficulties. But... I'm gettin' there. Hey, I'm learning computers at an elderly age, lol !!
But I'll post here tonight and see if I can find out why that EchoTopic is restricted. Something tells me that is what could be preventing me from opting out....
I'll let you all know; I won't abandon ship, nor the thread....
Thanks everyone!

"... browser is set wrong because as soon as I go to that EchoTopic site, it flags it as a "restricted site" ..."
If you've done the editing of the HOSTS file setting the EchoTopic site to 127.0.0.1, or set the site as restricted in IE Zones, therein lies your problem of the restricted site.
"... I'm learning computers at an elderly age, lol !!"
If the 1969 in your user name indicates your D.O.B., then you're not elderly. I've got 19 years on you. So do a couple of others here.
It's a good day when you learn something

Dan
What did Bing Crosby say to Sinatra in that old film "High Society"? Ah yes, it was "you must be one of the younger fellahs" LOL.Gimme_Shelter_1969
Apologies for any debate about whether you were coming back. We get so many on here that just vanish which means we never know the outcome. It's a bit odd this one. I happen to use Hosts for other reasons, hence I just slipped in that line to fix it. I have to agree entirely though that it should not be necessary to have to set up Hosts just to cure this particular issue.
Have you got some cookie cleaner program (such as CCleaner) because that's the only reason I can imagine the opt out fails? If so there is usually a facility to retain specified cookies.
I hope one of the methods works out for you and pop back for further assistance if you need to.
DerekW
