To eliminate the possibility that your USB drive is not dead, always first try it on another computer.

Then the only sensible thing left to do is get a new computer after you put the old & tired one out to pasture. .

You might also consider an add-in usb card - 2 or more ports?

If... this is desktop/tower system... then acquire a usb adapter card and install that. They usually come in 2, 4 or more ports; some even include a firewire option too. You "may" have t provide drivers for it; likely not...

If the problem is with the on-board usb faciltity... (and you haven't disabled it by accident/intent have you in bios etc...?) then it may allow you usb options again?

They're cheap enuff these days to try; and you maybe able to get it on trial (test and see) basis and return it if it still doesn't restore usb facs again?

mmm - Suggest you think about it? Logically if they're broken... they ain't gonna work?

Depending on where you are located... a plug-in card will cost a few pounds/dollars - or those brass washers known as Euros...

Look in your local stores; and on the www?

When you install a card... remove power/mains completely from the system to ensure "no" mains power going in at all; i.e. remove the power/mains cord... Otherwise if there is power/mains going in there may well be (actually there will be) volts running around the system even though you have switched ot off at the front...

Either the on-board usb facs are broken or they're not; or least Regardless - you have nothing to lose (apart from a few coins....) by acquiring a plug-in usb card; setting up as per instructions (that will come with it) and then seeing if you proceed from there?

At which point I will leave you follow (at least...) some of the ideas various posted here and elsewhere by people various; all pretty clear as to what you may be able to do etc. to resolve the issue?

do other USB devices work on your computer..ie Printers, cameras, scanners..anything USB? if so unplug the printer and use that port to retrieve your data. or go to the other computer where it worked and burn the data to a cd. Im sure its the data thats important not the USB device...
