Well I finally gave in and done something about the very sluggish performance with computing.net and IE.

I have now downloaded Opera browser and modified my preferences so it now opens pages immediately without all the flashy ads.

"Tools" > "Preferences" > "Advanced" tab > "Content" option on left.

Unchecked the following:

* Enable animated images
* Enable sound ion web pages
* Enable JavaScript
* Enable Java
* Enable Plug-Ins

It's a real shame that I now have a dedicated browser to visit only one site.

P.S. I realise I went into over-kill with the prefs but this browser is only going to be used on one site so this doesn't effect any other site I visit.

I'm surprised I got to the site at all today. I'd tried earlier and my browser just kept hanging while waiting for www.ads.tomshardware.com....
I gave up trying for a while, then when I came back later, it was slow loading, but did eventually get there.Seems the merger has had some adverse effects on CN, after all.

FYI,

This "sluggishness" is only in IE. In FireFox, Opera and Chrome there are no problems. Its just something with the way IE works. I realize telling people to change browsers is not a real solution to this problem. However, I guess the new design is slower on IE, and there's not much I can do about it. I've done all I can.

Funny. I just upgraded to XP Pro SP3 2 months ago, and though I post here rarely, I do visit the site almost daily. Connecting with the slow version of AT@T DSL.
I use I.E. 7. I have all the graphics running and speed is excellent. No issue.
At the beginning, I saw the cache (temp internet files) set to some absurd setting, and set it back. ... and I usually don't empty it. I read an article that it works something like a web accelerator which used to be available for 9X systems.
Just a thought.
Jack..

I very seldom browse with IE & lately have been using Google Chrome to experience the pros & cons of it vs. existing browsers out there. And CN does load & refreshes arguably slower in IE than the others, even including Chrome.

I beg to differ. I only use Firefox, and had these issues using that browser.

Sci-Guy,

Your issue sounds different. It sounds like a bad route to that server the other day... These people are talking about sluggish page load times when all the servers are responding fast.

On a crappy, and I do mean crappy, wireless connection I've only had one issue.

Yesterday morning about 10 pacific time, I could not connect to CN and one other forum. All other sites were fine. That problem cleared up an hour or two later...assumed it was a router issue on my end.

XP Pro SP3/IE6.

I took your advice btk1w1 and installed Opera... I'm glad I did, the connection and display is lightning fast now.

Regards.

Once I thought I was wrong, now I'm not so sure!
