Okay, I really hope someone can help me out here...
Earlier today I tried to delete systools.exe, spyware which has been plaguing my computer for months now. I downloaded something called "spyhunter" from www.2-spyware.com, which was supposed to fix the problem... Now I can't access any of my computer's programs (thankfully the Internet still works!) Anytime I try to open something in the Control Panel, the notepad opens up and I get this message: "This program cannot be run in DOS mode." Other programs inspire this message: "This program requires Microsoft Windows. You are already running Microsoft Windows. Unable to start Microsoft Windows." Arrggghhh!!! Please help me before I rip my hair out!!! (I knew I should have called someone in to clean up my computer...)

Put your XP CD into your CDROM.
Boot from the CD and reinstall XP over the top without reformating.
It called an "inplace upgrade"
www.support.microsoft.com has a MSKB article on how to perform this operation.
While your there. You may want to look into "how to perform a system restore from the command line".
That way your wouldn't have to do the inplace upgrade.

I tried to use my XP CD but when I clicked on "Install Windows XP" I got the same notepad message as before: "This program cannot be run in DOS mode." This makes no sense to me!!!

It sounds like "winnt" is missing or corrupt.
The statement is true.
Setup can't be run in DOS.
I think the path is...
D:\winnt\i386 /setup.exe
where "D:" is the drive letter of your CDROM

Pocahontas,
You may not have the correct CD to try what Dave02 suggested. If you know the manufacturer of your system, please post this info. We'd then try other suggestions.

okay from what ive read so far you guy believe that windows doesnt know that windows is running, which id agree on, so lets go from there...
I think that u werent sure or maybe misread what the first suggestion was, about an invert upgrade or something... (never heard of it, i'll fiddle with it abit thou). Booting from a cd means that you place the cd into the cdrom drive, reboot the computer, and then when "press any key to boot from cd...." happens, press a key. Then i guess its in there someplace but i have no idea what an invert upgrade is so i cant help you from there..
i figured this cause it says you clicked on something, and that program your gonna use doesnt allow u to use the mouse.

Thank you for all of your suggestions, but so far nothing is working.
The manufacturer of my system is Dell, and the CD I'm using is called "Reinstallation CD, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Including Service Pack 1".
When I start my computer, I get over 40 notepad windows popping up, all of them with that annoying "This program cannot be run in DOS mode" message, followed by a bunch of garble. As I said before, none of my programs are working.
My CDROM drive is "E:" and I tried putting in the Reinstallation disc, going to the Start menu, clicking "Run", and tryping E:\i386\winnt.exe, but once again I only got a notepad and the usual message about DOS mode. What's funny in my situation is that my computer doesn't even appear to be running in DOS mode... When I start it up, everything's normal except the notepad messages and the fact that I can't run any programs. Oh, and I have no little icons in the right corner of the bar at the bottom of the screen next to the clock, and I usually have about 5.
Anyway, I also tried just running E:, and that actually opened up a folder for me, and I was able to manually click on the I386 folder. Inside that there were tonnes of files, but I found three icons called "WINNT32". The first was a "Stub loader for WINNT32 setup program", the secondd was a "Type: Help File," and the third and most promising was "Type: Windows Installer Package." I opened door number three and was rewarded with a menu that had six options that I can't remember now (this all happened at about 2:30am this morning), but the screen told me that the setup would finish in 51 minutes. I went to bed while the computer was in the process of restarting itself...
When I got up this morning, the computer was off (which I suppose could've been one of my roommates, but I doubt it because they don't like the way I spaz out when anyone touches my comp), so I turned it none of my problems have gone away. I tried opening WINNT again, but now I'm getting absolutely nothing, and I haven't done anything different!!! Please help...

The manufacturer of my system is Dell, and the CD I'm using is called "Reinstallation CD, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Including Service Pack 1."
