My XP installation is running fine. There's one really annoying thing that is driving me almost insane.
Whenever I right click on any icon in the My Computer window, it takes up to two minutes for the drop down menu to appear.
Double-clicking opens the hard drive or CD-ROM disc immediately.
If I select an icon (Drive C for example) then go to the File menu at the top of the My Computer window, the same thing happens, the computer locks up for at least a minute before the menu appears.
When the menu does appear (whether by right-clicking or the last method) I can do all the usual stuff.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

hi mandy,
try disabling all the wistles of winxp by; going to control panel -> system -> advance tab and settings button on performance and click on "adjust for best performance". Click all oks and applys and see what's happens. it should do the trick but also depends on your computer speed and system memory and also on video card and it's ram.
hopefully that will help,
Al

I've tried that, the thing is that any other folder in any other window allows me to right click on it and the menu shows up instantly. It's only in the My Computer window and it only affects the Hard Disk Drives or the CD-ROM drive.
At the moment I'm in thumbnail view and the window is split up into
Files Stored on This Computer
underneat here are three folders (Mandy's Documents, Shared Documents and Administrator's Documents)The next section is Hard Disk Drives
This has two icons Syst (C) and Data (E)The final section is Devices With Removable Storage, with only one icon (3.5" Floppy (A:)
If I right click either of those last three icons the PC freezes, it's as if it's checking something first, could it be IDE/DMA related? Left click, no delay and no problem.

Me again
I should mention that before posting I actually physcially removed my CD-ROM drive to see if that might help. It didn't. It's quite annoying as I often need to right click on a drive icon, as I say, it only affects drive icons, not folder icons even if in the same window.
I've even made shortcuts to the drive icons and right clicking them has exactly the same effect, hour glass for 90 seconds or so

Hmmm I'm starting to suspect it might be shell extension. "Scan with AVG", "Browse With ACDSee" or one of the others, I'll suss out how to disable them to see if that helps.
Anyone got any other ideas

Whats the specs on your computer? Have u checked your taskmanager to see if something is either hogging your cpu cycles or your memory? If that checks out ok i would look for driver issues. Are your cdrom drivers updated,BIos,chipset, etc. Is your XP updated? I checked the microsoft database to see if there were any problems related to this and really couldnt find any. good luck
