Hello folks... Can someone please tell me what on earth I'm doing wrong in my quest to stop these silly EchoTopic ads that infiltrate this computing.net website from popping up?

I click the tiny "?" in the ad, then that takes you to their EchoTopic page... then I click the bottom link where it asks you if you want to opt out of recieving these pop-ups on computing.net.
Note... I get that little red "restricted site" flag way down on the bottom (taskbar area) when the EchoTopic page gets displayed.

Could it be because of the EchoTopic page getting flagged as a "restricted site" be what is keeping me from activating the opt out link?

I have tried repeatedly to block these EchoTopic pop-ups from popping up; no dice. I tried rebooting.... no dice. I tried logging out then logging back in..... no dice. Two or three reboots... no dice. Clicking the EchoTopic "opt out" link repeatedly about a dozen times.... no dice.
What do they put the "opt out" link there for if it doesn't work? I must be missing something but darned if I can find out what.

I am disabled and I would rather not play dodge-ems with those red underlined links; my wrist dexterity is not the best.... hope nobody is laughing at me but it's no fun to loose arm and leg dexterity. I'd sure like to scroll without dodging all those red underlined links.
Usually I try to keep my cursor towards the right-hand side to avoid these links, but of course when you get older your memory is not what it once was neither, lol...

So if anyone can tell me how to stop these, I'd appreciate it. Seems as though you can't even go and take a good dump anymore without somebody throwing something in your face to read.
I know... I know.... it pays for the forum and and I'm not crtitcizing that... I just want to know how to stop the damn things from popping up once and for all.

Thank you in advance....

The only way "I" have heard of getting rid of the ads is by using firefox and installing a particular script. Try googling: greasemonkey scripts text ads.

Hold tight someone here is bound to know another method.

Good luck

Easy ....

Simply add *.tribalfusion.com to your restricted site applet in internet options (Security) & watch EchoTopic go poof! I did the same with intellitxt prior to the this topical menace.

After you click "opt out", try refreshing the page

You can also use a hosts file.

Here's my list (probably not all applicable to here but the last one certainly used to be):

127.0.0.1 tribalfusion.com
127.0.0.1 image.ugo.com
127.0.0.1 tribalfusion.speedera.net
127.0.0.1 spinbox.versiontracker.com
127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 s0b.bluestreak.com
127.0.0.1 static.vpptechnologies.com
127.0.0.1 msxml.467v078s095.com
127.0.0.1 ads.flashtrack.net
127.0.0.1 ad.uk.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 compnet.us.intellitxt.com
127.0.0.1 kona.kontera.com

You just bung them in your hosts file and ensure that the very first entry at the top is:
127.0.0.1 localhost

Worked fine for me.

Don't know why it didn't work for you - it worked for me. As a matter of fact, deleting the entry instantaneously bring back the underline scourge.

Maybe someone else can verify that .... anyone?

sabertooth...maybe Echotopic is using a different url. You can't right click on the underlined text to find any properties. I did click on the question mark within a popup and it takes you to the page where you can "opt out" but opt out doesn't work. The url used for the Opt out link is
ctxtad.tribalfusion.com/....
Mystified. Why won't it work for me?

Hey,

The opt-out link worked fine for me in both IE 7 and Firefox. I will e-mail EchoTopic about this possible error. Feel free to give any more information you think might help.

Good morning friends... Wow, I didn't know there would be so many responses here; thanks everyone so much....
I'm still baffled with it... opt out doesn't work here neither. But I'll keep trying a few different things here including that tribul fusion possibility...
For now, I'll continue Jennifer's method of keeping the cursor to the right-side of the page.

If anyone has a permanent fix or pertinent info, please list it.. Many thanks!

As I said, hosts worked for me but first see if the webmaster (Justin) unearths anything about the opt out.

i also got nowhere with that, but i am also not sure it Should have worked!

The optout works for me. Make sure you just need to optout once. Another click will bring to back the ads.
