Try saving the attachment somewhere on your computer (note where it is putting it). You should then be able to double click the saved file to view the contents. My guess is that it is either associated with the wrong program or, more likely, not associated with anything at all. If that is the case you have to make the association and then it will be fine in emails too.
Unfortunately I've never even owned a Mac so I'm not familiar with the association procedure, without using Google to find out. In this respect you probably know more about it than I do. The file type (three characters after the dot) would help if you can see it.
